Damage Control

Ok, so I am still learning my DLSR. Its a Pentax *ist D. Yeah, not a Canon or anything special but for the deal I got it for I cant complain. It takes pretty good pictures and I am trying to get better with it.
I think a new lens might help me in that aspect. All I have is a 18-55 but I dont know what a good range lens to get would be. Another questiuon is should I even put anymore money into this camera or should I just sell it and buy a better one? Oh, if it helps the main thing I get the camera out for is taking pics of my nephew, and I shot a bunch at SEDD. Am going to do a shoot of my bros new R6S and eventually my car when it gets done. Ok, Ive bored you enough.

Question to ask is, what do you find yourself wanting to do that your current lens won't? 18-55 is a good starting range, so most people who need a second lens will bump up against one end of the range and buy their next lens accordingly (wider or longer tele, based on where the 18-55 ran out of range for them).

Brian, what is your price range? What is the focal length you use (or would like to use) the most? Also, try joining a photography forum, if you haven't already. Not only are they a great source of advice for technique and the like, but people often post about lenses they like/ have used, and many sites have "archives" of photos with certain lens/ camera combos. That way, you can get an idea of what things look like, and how they coincide with what you are looking for.
Once piece of advice I can offer is to not be afraid of a lens from third party manufacturers (Tamron, Sigma, etc). Also, don't shy away from a lens because it is expensive, but don't blow all your money on one either lol. Lenses, at least with most manufacturers can be used on many different bodies, so while you may upgrade the camera, you can use the same lenses for a long time.

+1 on other lens manufaturers. Took this one on Saturday why my "crappy" Pheonix lens that I picked up a couple of years ago.
100-300mm lens, the flower was in the middle of the patch about 10-15 feet away. And me without my tri-pod. ![]() However, I think my next lens will probably be an Image Stabalized one. I got way to used to it on my Canon S2-IS. This was the first time I used my DSLR on saturday and I kept saying to myself, "Damn, is my hand really THAT shaky?!?" lol ![]()
