Your thoughts..my XTi should be gone this weekend. Looking to pick up a replacement and figured I'd either get a 40d or a 5d but I can't decide. Experienced Photogs help me out.

depends what you're planning on doing
for an all around camera or if you plan on shooting sports or anything where you would need a high frame rate and better focus system I'd get the 40D, a lot of pros use the xxD bodies exclusively if you're not planning on shooting any sports or fast moving things I'd get the 5D also keep in mind the rumor mill has been running pretty wild lately about a 5D replacement coming out soon, so if you go that route you might to wait a little bit to see if you can pick up a used one at a nice discount

in the skate/bmx world the 5d has a focal length of 1.0x which would make a HUGE difference when shooting wide angle photography. for that exact reason I would get a 5d over the 40d. however the 40d has a 1.6x multiplier so your telephoto shots will be even more zoomed in. i also hear the 5d can render much larger prints clearer and smoother than the 40d in comparison.
the 5d is nearly 3-4 years old by now and I've heard of rumors of a 5d mark 2 coming out soon with 16MP DIGIC III. and a much like the 40d it will have 14-bit raw capture and a better AF system hope this helps. i don't own either but I was starring at the two for a long time until I just bought an XTi instead. ![]()

Patrick posted this to me on Bawc: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=27125455
I'm not spending 4k on a rig just yet, though I am debating waiting a few weeks because when the 5d MKII comes out the price of the MKI is going to plummet into the 1.2k range which works better for me. |

We have the 40d, purchased mainly because of the focusing system, the better processor, and the price point.
The downfall is it's not a full frame camera so we're having a hard time with wide-angle stuff. We would prefer to have all Canon L-series but there's not a telephoto that fits our needs (wide like 16-17mm with a zoom up to 55 or 70mm zoom with f2.8) We ended up getting a Tamrom 17-50mm f2.8. If we had a 5d or other full-frame camera, we'd be able to get the L-series lenses. That paragraph didn't make much sense... what I'm trying to say is that we don't want to carry TOO many lenses, 3 is enough and if we had a full-frame camera we could probably have worked with 2 (the 24-70 canon and the 70-200 canon).. Since the 24mm on a full-frame is about the same as a 17 on our 40d). The 24-70 would just not be wide enough on the 40d.

if you want wide on a 40D get the 10-22
midrange get the 17-55 2.8 IS (or tamron 17-50 2.8) telephoto get one of the 70-200s or 100-400 the only reason the 10-22 and 17-55 aren't L lenses is because they are EF-S mount, the optics are L quality though |
