the 17-50 range is a good beginner range, after that if you always find yourself wanting more zoom get a 70-200F4L, or if you always find yourself wanting wider get a 10-22

there is just no reason to piss away money on crappy lenses just to see if you like the range, start out with a good midrange lens and work from there
But according to you also in this thread one would be hard pressed to find a good midrange below the $350 price point. I just don't think that a beginner needs to spend that kind of bank starting out. There are many GOOD lenses below that price point.

lol i know. i was just in the zone

but i agree, its best to start with a good midrange lens, especially for a beginner. personally, Id like to push learning through a mirange prime - the beginner is forced to do all his zooming manually (foot zoom) and aperture/DoF gets more pronounced with a midrange prime than a zoom.

once they get an understanding of the subjects and range they want, then they can start investing upwards the focal range or downwards

do a search in the for sale section on www.photography-on-the.net there are always 20D's for sale on there, especially since the 40D came out

I've had my XTi for over a year. I said WHEN I WAS LOOKING. How many of those people selling have upgraded to 40d's? Most? It wasn't around when I picked up my XTi, the 20d wasn't as available due to people upgrading. I walked into B&H and asked if they had any 20d's possibly in stock/used. They told me nothing new because it was discontinued and when I asked the guy behind the counter at B&H if he knew anywhere I could possibly find them.. looked at me and said "Nope, Good Luck!"

not really, pretty much the only lens worth a damn below $300 is the 50 1.8

oh and if you think $300+ for lenses is "bank" you're in the wrong hobby

that's true, but you also don't want them to get frustrated with it

besides it's not like the 50mm 1.8 is so cost prohibitive you couldn't get both

for only $150-200 more you could have a much more capable setup if you buy used
