[quote=Red92vr4;4754839]For nice panning shots to avoid motion blur, other than the background use the following trick. Try setting the shutter speed to the focal length plus about one or two stops. ( 100mm lens for example would use a shutter speed of 1/100th, then go to 1/125th or 1/160th). Hope that helps you.
yeah, this is kind of unrelated but for you experience photographers out there, would anyone be willing to make a car-photoshoot tutorial as a permanent, un-editable thread with tips like this? There is a small tutorial in the AV room but it isn't very comprehensive, especially for things like HDR which I would love to learn or even taking clear, sharp night pictures w/o too much glare. just an idea, but i think it would be super cool/helpful |

there really isn't a right or wrong way to take car pictures, just practice a lot and look at what other people have taken and emulate the styles you like, actually that method could be applied to all photography and not just cars. There are some basic guidelines, but often times the best pictures will be the ones that break those guidelines, with time you'll eventually start to develop your own style. will you take a lot of crappy pictures? probably, but every once in a while you will get a good one, and that's where posting on a forum where you can get some good solid (sometimes brutally honest) critique comes in, so you know what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong and what you have improved on, and ultimately lower the amount of crappy pictures in between the good ones. If you post somewhere and all anyone ever says is how awesome your pictures are (no matter how bad they are) you'll never show much improvement because you won't know what's right/wrong about your pictures

I'm actually going to go as far as to say that I would NOT recommend the XT if you're planning on shooting any sort of action photography, or targeting things that are in motion, such as the animals you mention. Unfortunately, the rumors of poor autofocus response with the XT are true. A good friend of mine and I went birding recently (which normally doesn't interest me, but I have a sketch I'm working on and needed some reference images), and either his XT would miss the flight shot due to a perceived lack of contrast, or come out slightly under focused, while my XTi shot just fine.
YMMV. However, it's something to consider depending on your given intent.
