There are a few different ways to build this type of differential, but basically they all rely on the unique property of worm gears. A worm gear can turn another gear, but the other gear can't turn the worm gear. The gear ratios are designed with a certain amount of torque bias built-in (usually a small clutch or spring pack in the middle too). This is what allows the torque split range. Torsen is a specific type owned by the Gleason Corp. Theirs was one of the first types created, and it's what's used in the HMMWV (Hummer H1) and Audi Quatro. The Torsen web site has some pretty good information on how theirs works, and it's pretty much the same for any configuration. It's a good read for anyone that wants to know how these work.

I think the Quaife is a derivative of the Torsen, but I never have researched the patents to see who has licensed what from who....

how will the out put shaft hold up to big power ranges?...or rather will the entire unit be able to not grenade under fast amounts of torque? (launching)

I am pretty darn sure that is the general idea. There wouldn't be much point to making a diff and OS combo that would be weaker than already available components. You certainly wouldn't sell more than a few, which sort of defeats the purpose to the entire endeavor.

Yes! I had the first one in my car at the NG and it kicked ass! No more power underrsteer. The car goes wherever you steer. If you want to turn more, just turn more and add more gas. All four tires chirp and bite into the asphalt and the car just goes wherever I tell it to. Lots of traction, it sticks like crazy, but it's driftable at the same time, if you provoke it into a sideways skid. It's a completely different car. It's all what we knew all along what an AWD car should be.

I am getting the Torsen diffs and starting to build them as soon as they are here. The initial price should be about $2,500. It's worth every penny. This is the best SCE product since the StopTech kits and the Dog Box. It's a must-have for anyone who loves the AWD.

will this be something needing installed or will there be an option of it being in a rebuilt tranny?

The installation is simple, similar to installing the front diff.

We do not offer transmission rebuilds anymore, and I am not sure if I want to start offering rebuild services again. But if you want to have someone install this diff in you tranny, ***any*** transmission shop will be able to do it for you. Of course 3/S shops do it better.

is this still going to use a different output shaft and if so, what will the weight and shaft be like?
