yeah.

the gears are always meshed but the whine is barely noticable unless loaded.

i could live with straight cut 1,2, and 3

Why exactly are straight cut gears better then helical ,I nobody is breaking gears ?

Let me post some clarifications. No pics yet though, sorry.

It will be a dog box with all new gears. The gear ratios are TBD. The pricing is about the same that some of you guys were quoted, not more, but not much cheaper either. A dogbox is not a fancy mod for street ricers, so only those with a real need and money will be buying them. Therefore the emphasis is on quality, strength and (hopefully) better gear ratios.

The first pilot is a 6-speed. The 5-speed is following in a short order though. There is quite a bit of similarities between the two transmissions, so a lot of engineering will be carried over.

It's not sequential. A sequential gearbox would require a complete redesigh. At that point it would be easier to make a case from scratch and stuff it with off-the-shelf gears.

The gears will be helical. Like Frank noticed, nobody breaks those gears, and the only reason to go with straight gears is tooth strenght, which comes at a cost of a a whiny transmission. Anyone cares to drive a car where the transmission is louder than the engine?

If the tooth strength proves to be a problem in the future, which is unlikely given the 15 years of 3/S drag racing experience, then straight-cut 1st and 2nd gears can be made, no problem. I do not want to hear any "whining" then that the transmission is loud.

The 3rd gear ratios will have to remain unchanged. The third gear meshes with the central differential body, so if the central differential is kept unchanged then the 3rd gearset will have to remain the same.

The 1st gear will probably eventually be taller. Suggestions from drag racers are welcome, both 5 and 6-speed. The second gear is in between the 1st and 3rd. The 4th gear will be shorter.

The tallest 5/6th gear is for cruizing. I personally like the "MR" 6th gear ratio where I cruise at 75-80 mph at 2500 rpm. This is also what appers the stock 5-speed ratio is. Any objections to that?

I will have pics hopefully in a few days. A test drive is just around the corner. It is sooner than most think, but do not press me for a date as I do not want to rush or promise anything. I do not want to sacrifice any transmissions to a hasty development. The dog box is coming, that is for sure.

Philip

That's awesome. I look forward to hearing progress on this. Though I may not be a potential customer anytime soon, I think this is an excellent idea.

Thanks for the update Philip - it is greatly appreciated!

I'd like to see an option for straight-cut gears. It isn't the tooth strength that I'm interested in (it could be argued that either design is similar for tooth strength) - it is reducing the side load against the case and bellhousing that I'm personally interested in.

Right, 'cuz if this uses helical cut gears, then I'm not sure what differences there are between this and the faceplate mod that was in the other thread? I was thinking this might be straight cut to eliminate the bell-splitting forces.

I read the thread and it seems as though it'll be around $20,000 then. Am I mistaken? As previously there are only two quotes of a price for a dogbox, one at 20K and another at 120K (typeo i hope )

Roughly, is that correct?

Uhhh.... no. That was what someone else got when they talked to Prodrive about making a sequential computer controlled dogbox 'ala WRC cars. This isn't going to be dirt cheap but it will be NOWHERE NEAR $20,000 much less $120,000
