i prefer the high HP and long gearing approach.

Thanks for the correct. It was an assumtion on my part based on number of model years in production. I had no idea the 5-speeds where more common... thanks again.

Wait... your sig confuses me. Is your car sold, or just the GT3076R's?

Why are people afraid of short gearing? It's better for road racing and possibly better for drag racing, depending on your setup. What other situation would you even want a dogbox for?

The 3076R's, headers, FMIC, piping, dp, exhaust, the whole nine yards. All I have left is a long block pretty much.

I'm not afraid of short gearing, I just don't like it. I'm a drag racer, I could care less about road racing.

I'd like to see what this comes out to, but I'm still leaning more toward the face plate modification for my spare tranny.

I hate pre-release threads though. At least with Sean(NoCar)'s thread we had pics in very short order.

This pre-release thread is kind of my fault. Another 3si member and myself were campaigning and recruiting people we thought would be interested in a dogbox. The "other" 3si person already had the introductions done with a manufacturer and was moving forward. I thought Phillip might be interested so I sent him an e-mail at which time he indicated he already had one going and nearing completion.

Blame Canada, err I mean me.
you can blame Canada if you want though, I won't be upset

6-speed as in 6 forward gears? Or 6-speed as in designed to mate to a 6-speed transfer case? If SCE is designing this purely for quarter-mile use, he may just use a 4 gear transmission (though that may reduce street driveability).

Well, with straight cut gears, it'll remove the outward forces under load that have been splitting a few trannies, so that'll remove another weak point. The faceplate option retains the stock helical cut gears which means the forces are still going to be there, ready to split your tranny if you make enough power.

Hmmm.... just a thought. We know that straight-cut gears come with the characteristic whine. What causes the whine exactly and would it eliminate the whine for highay cruising if we had only 1-4 straight cut and leave 5-6 helical? I'm wondering where the whine comes from because at first, I thought it might be just the way straight cut gears mesh as opposed to helical, but if that's the case, then ALL gears are ALWAYS meshed and rotating with the input shaft (except when the clutch is disengaged).

The only difference when shifting is which gear gets locked to the output shaft. In that case though, the whine should correspond with how fast the gears are spinning together which would correspond to rpms, but the whine is not related to rpms, it changes in pitch with the speed of the car i.e. the rpms of the output shaft.

Exactly... Since we are still at somewhat moderate power levels (600-700 awhp) and breaking cases open, something is going to have to be done to reduce that problem. Straight-cut gears should greatly reduce that risk since then the shafts won't be trying their best to exit the cases.

The other issue is whether or not the stock helical gears can handle the sort of power people are going to be putting out over the next year or two. The stock gears look pretty good, and can take quite a bit of abuse - but there's going to be a limit somewhere.

Yes, the whine is from how the gears mesh. With the helical gears there are always a few teeth at least partially meshed so the gear alignment is always pretty good. With the straight-cut gears there is only one tooth meshed, and a good portion of the time it isn't even fully meshed.

You could do helical 5-6 to have a couple cruising gears. Just use the stock gears and synchros for those gears.

The whine mostly comes from whichever gears are under load. Idling gears don't make nearly as much noise.

BTW, I'm the "other member" that Jeremy is referring to... If this thing isn't a serious go from Philip - I'd like to know so I can resume development.

Hmmm... so the loading amplifies the whine? OK. Now aside from billet forks, one other thing might be a good idea with a crashbox. Is there a way to replace our shifter cables with rods or are our cables going to be OK?
