Well if it were me for $200 I would have had it reinstalled no questions asked. Ed, take the opportunity that Jeff gave you and take your gripe up with Mitsu over the transmission. While IPS could be liable for worksmanship on the install, they can't be liable for a faulty part, and in your case a transmssion that was faulty from the manufacturer.

And only $200 for a transmission R&R?? Talk about a no-brainer deal of a lifetime! The best I can get around here from a reputable shop is $600-$700. +1000 for Jeff for offering to go well beyond the call of duty!!

New project in the works

Riddle me this. We installed a take-out engine for a customer. He bought the engine, we put it in. Engine was knocking from the go, we highly advised for him to not use this engine to begin with (oil pan was crushed, oil pickup/pump was cracked, vehicle had been in a collision). He ended up taking the pos dsm back, bad mouthing us locally, having a 2nd shop write a bogus write-up saying we destroyed the engine because it was "running rich" (this is really funny as I have a fairly good tuning reputation and this shop that called us out only had a 5 gas analyzer). He charged back on his card, we finally got out money back over a year later. THATS RIGHT! It will probably take you a solid year to recover the funds for the original transaction. THANK GOD we took pictures of the busted oil pump housing, dyno charts, signed work waivers, and copies of the parts receipts of the new oil pump we put on there. Don't worry though, you can't charge for the time it will take, or the interest the credit card company makes on holding those funds..

$200? Are you serious? for that kinda of money I wouldn't even bother having the car moved to another shop. What is it going to cost you $75-90 just to have the car towed? If someone like IPS that knew what they were doing offered to swap out my trans for $200 a pop I wouldn't even drop my own trans anymore. I'd be in back grilling and drinking some beer instead. I guess Ed's time must not be worth much to him.

My shop is a general repair shop that does SOME performance work, not a full time performance shop.. So the warranty policy is going to be different overall. But IMHO the IPS should have just eaten the $200, and kept a satisfied customer.. (and just have a six month backlog next time he calls..)
As it stands now, IPS has lost all the labor cost for the install, as well as the profit from the part sale... He would have been much better off financially to just send his tech home for the day... While The OP's method of dealing with this situation is way out of line.. he did so because in his mind he is being screwed over.. So his knee jerk reaction was to screw back... Now IPS has another ex customer running around badmouthing them.. In hindsight that $200 isn't so important now is it? It basically comes down to having a clear warranty policy that is plainly understood by the customer.(a signed work order with the warranty policy printed on it never hurts) Of course it also depends on the pricing structure.. In my shop, this would not have even been a question.. It would have been swapped out at my expense.. But that is our policy, and we self insure against the inevitable loss such as this one in our pricing structure... For instance, let's say doing one over costs a shop $300.. And one in fifty have to come back out.. You have to charge less than $10 more per job, to self insure for such an occurrence. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying IPS did anything wrong here.. I'm just pointing out that human nature as it pertains to customer relations is very predictable.. This situation could have been foreseen and avoided.. And the reasons for doing so should be self evident.. The only people that got screwed in this situation is IPS...

Just as an update:
I talked to Ed and he agreed it sounded like a good idea to bring the car back in, have us get a warrantied tranny from Mitsu, and swap it out at our cost like we originally offered. Thanks for all the opinions and glad this could get resolved so quickly Jeff

Ed should contact the BBB to withdraw his complaint. It would be the right thing to do. He should also pay you immediately.
This was an unfortunate situation. Another bump in the road.
