Default 93 3000GT Non-tubor DOHC knock at Idel stops knocking after 1500rpms

HI,

I have a 1993 3000gt non-turbo dohc. The problem is it started knocking (not ticking) very heavy knock, from what it sounds like from the top of the motor more from the drivers side of the motor..

Knocks immediately at startup. If I hold the idle at 1400rpm or take it higher than that than the knock stops (cant hear it).. Doesnt matter if the engine is hot or cold ... I've changed the oil and it still sounds the same? What if any kind of noise will you get if the timing tensioner is going bad? Had several people look at it and said it didn't sound like a rod knock.

Thanks for any input

Hi, you ever figure this out? mine does the same thing. it knocks, and around 2krpm the knocking goes away, I thougth it was a bad lifter, so I replaced them all, it still does it. Im not sure what it could be at this point.

replace your crank pulley. the rubber on it is probably going bad
the engine has more vibration to the balancer in a low idle. at higher rpms the engine gets a more stable vibrations pattern and exhaust is consistent which cuts out vibration. not saying this is 100% the problem, but it is what happened to my cousins 95 3k sl, put a new crank pulley on it. all good after that

Wow kid you are on a roll for bad information.

I repeat, refrain from posting advice unless you know what you are talking about.

usually knock means bearing problems 99 percent of the time. Have you reved the engine all the way up to about 4 or 5 because there can be instances where it can disappear at certain rpms, brian correct me if im wrong

A lot of people confuse knock and lifter tick. Sometimes its worse than lifter tick and is a (partially) collapsed lifter. I had that once in my TSI and it sounded like hell at idle. Once moving though the noise completely disappeared.

The real problem with diagnosing problems on the internet is people need to learn more about the terminology so they can correctly post about exactly what the problem is.

OK, I figured it out after 1 year!!! my knock on my stealth would go away after 2000rpm or so, I replaced my lifters and it still knocked, the other day, I took off the timming cover started the car and noticed the belt was flapping between the water pump and cam pully. When I rev the engine past 2500 the belt straightened up and the sound goes away. I began a timming belt strip down again, and noticed the tensioner had leaked its oil and was not working at all anymore!! I replaced it, TROUBLE FIXED. no more knock....
