California police are extremely stringent on mods and can impound them if they think it's not street legal. It's a bit ridiculous imo
funny, all I get from police in california is nods and nice comments like "nice ride" or "cool car man" back in NY I used to get the mad dog stare and the following me close for blocks, not saying you are not right but I have not had any issues with them here and hope it remains that way, I travel all the time, the worst cops aside from the good for nothing NYC cops are the Washington PD... only place where a cop will chase you in the middle of a snow blizzard to get you for a tail light turn signal out, things like that they should allow you to punch the bastards in the mouth for being such idiots, hey, plenty of other stuff going on right now, like a blinding snow storm you pig

I dislike the police in small towns where I grew up in because they have nothing better to do then profile anyone who has a sporty-ish vehicle and pull em over and ticket them for anything they can find.
people around my area are always like " man, those things suck, they always break down" or " all your going to do is put money into it" my vr4 blew a rod ( get the laugh out of the way) and im buying a new engine because i fell in love with the damn thing when i first laid eyes on it!!! even with a horrid rod knock :/ but it WILL be fixed. im sure everyone will hate. but thats the people who have daddy buy them evos, and wrx's, and etc etc... and guys that drive honda hatch backs.... bahaha. i dont get it. why no love for vr4 lol. i believe im the ONLY one in my area that has one ))
These cars are old as heck, and a lot of the owners keep them in near new shape.
That alone earns a lot of forced respect.
I think part of the problem is the forced respect these cars project.
Better than your (others driving, in parking lots, etc.) car, probably.
Do I have to say that? No, the car does it.
Yes, it's fast, I helped build it and learned how to control it, no you can't drive it.
I love how people still ask me if they can drive it.
When you put this many hours into stringent care and maintence, then, only then.
My mechanic and my mom are the only ones who've drove it other than me.

To be fair, it isn't the best built car. Not a knock on it, it was never meant to be a reliable Honda, but compared to modern sports cars... well, let's just say I would pick another car if I had to bet my life on it.
He didn't say it was the best built car, he said most of them are still kept in good condition by their owners which for the most part is true. Most of the ones I have seen have been well kept and have had a lot of love and care put into them. Of course there are some that irresponsible kids have gotten a hold of and haven't enough cash or motivation to keep in good shape but most of them are well-kept. After all they were a pretty darned expensive sports car when they were new.

Probably because it has a dodge counter part, i have noticed the same thing. I have a 98SL and it is gorgeous! non car people complement me all the time but any car person doesnt seem to care about it. I do get love from the dsm or neon guys but never any nissan or subi people. Ah well, i take pride in my mitsu, its jdm and what not. Another thing is prob the wheel wells being so big. you cant slam a 3kgt that easily, especially if you want it "flush".
The car will get respect when you stop seeing them on flatbeds getting moved around town, oh man I just saw 2 getting towed and mine is sitting in a bank parking lot with a dead fuel pump
