Default Wheel lock question

I contacted the closest mitsubishi dealer to see if I could give them my VIN to get a new wheel lock key ordered. They told me I need to come to their shop so they can visually see which lock it is. That is about 3 1/2 hours away.

How can I take the locks off and put regular ones on? I just don't want to be left stranded if I get a flat plus I am planning on getting some new tires soon.

Can I trust a shop like sears or a tire place to get them off?

Thanks

i experienced the same thing when my wheel lock key got stripped out (no clue how). i had to take it into the mitsubishi dealership so they could test it on their master set and then they ordered whichever color it was. they are extremely difficult to visually compare (i tried).

a local shop like sears will probably have no idea how to get it off without having the key. (they may know how, but they probably won't be allowed to do it). the best bet is to go to the dealership unfortunately.

most after market rim shops that install the rims for you will have a tool that will take the lug nut off without needing key. they did it to one of my lugnuts when i broke it where the key couldnt grip it. its kinda like a reverse screw and srews into it and then locks and undoes the lugnut. if that made any sense...

Its a socket that the shop bangs on with a hammer and then uses an impact gun to turn. Most shops have them and will do it for you. Midas, STS, ECT

Not a huge deal. I had a local shop remove some locking lug nuts on my car. Took them all of 5 minutes to remove all 4. One was stubborn and took two minutes.

Thanks for the replies. It seems like this isn't that big of a deal. I will just have to try some local shops and see if they have the tools to get them off. It would be nice if I could upgrade to some new rims but that can wait
