Lately I've been getting a tick, tick, tick only when the rpms reach anything over 3k and typically NOT while under load. If I keep it at say 3500 rpm, I get a constant ticking.
I know what you're probably thinking - lifter tick, right? I actually don't think it is. I had lifter tick for months but that went away a few months ago when I had the 2nd gen lifters put in along with a full 120k service (timing belt, accessory belts, oil pump, etc, etc, etc). This ticking is about as loud as lifter tick but sounds slightly different and I think it's strange that it only happens after 3k rpm. Also, if it starts ticking and then I accelerate, the ticking seems to stop until I let off the gas - then it comes right back (assuming I'm still over 3k rpm). I was wondering if this could possibly be some contact between the pistons and the valves. I really hope not... I've got a data logger hooked up and the timing seems okay (I think) but maybe the valves are sticking a little bit? This may have something to do with it: Just the other day I noticed the oil was about a quart and a half low I hadn't noticed any leaks and the pressure seemed normal so I hadn't thought to check it. I had my oil changed maybe a month ago with some synthetic (or partially synthetic) Mobile 1 5W30.Alright, I could go on and on... If there's some more info I can give you that would be helpful, please let me know. I could take a vid, post logger data, etc. Thanks in advance for your help! |

I'm still thinking its just lifter tick, u could bput some rp in there, or sea foam could do the trick,
by 2nd gen lifters I assume you don't mean '99 lifters as those are the 3rd gen. I would've gone with the 99 lifters that have the larger opening (3mm i believe) which would get rid of your ticking. Let me know which you put in there, and maybe its not lifter tick, but i'm leaning toward that

Ah, yes, I did mean 99 lifters. I didn't realize they were 3rd gen but they are the ones with the larger (3mm?) opening. They're from the group buy that I found on here.
If there are any relatively easy ways to rule out what the sound could be, that would be good to know too. |
