My car has 98k on it at the very moment, however I recently found out I've got a rebuilt/ new engine in my car that I was not told of when i bought it. The previous owner, a highschool kid said he had no idea if the 60k tuneup was done. I found the previous registration from the previous owner and he had it for about a year and a half from 06 to 08 and bought it with 86k.
I don't think the kid knew about the engine since he wasn't knowledgable enough about some parts of the car. With that in mind, and certain plans I have for my SL, I'm deeply considering getting the whole 60k tuneup done only because I don't know much about the vehicles past. It runs good, I have no problems driving it. And it might have less miles than it currently says on my meter, or more, I'm not sure. Should I go ahead and get the full tuneup or just the timing belt etc.? And is it possible to find out more about work done on the car at a dealership or DMV?

I would go ahead and get the full tune up...wouldn't hurt unless your budget is tight. Always better to know for sure if you plan to keep it for a while. As far as finding repair info, dmv would mainly have records of flood/salvage/lemon...etc...not so much repairs. And the dealer would have records only if the car was serviced at the dealer, although it may help...but I would'nt rely on it 100%. Being that the previous owner was a kid, he most likely had repairs/service done maybe at a local shop with a lower labor rate if he was paying for it. Just my thoughts...

I think I'm gonna have to get the full tuneup, I was having a bad knock on the way back home and I recorded a similar one and showed it to my Pops. He suggests I do the whole tune up as well.

hate to tell you this, but....although a full tuneup will greatly benefit the car...I don't think it will have any affect on the "bad knock"....could be something internal with the engine (lifters, most likely) or you could get lucky like me and find that an ac or radiator fan was just making a clicking sound and just need to be replaced...
But then again...I'm speaking from experience....maybe some tech or expert on this site can help you out with that "bad knock" |
