also, it's been said twice that i could get a better car for that money. are you talking better than a stealth rt in gerneral? on the same platform, the vr4 or rt/tt would be "better" in a way, but i will have skyhigh insurance as i am only 16.

I bought my 96 Stealth RT with 155k miles, wiht brand new clutch, struts, and within the last 20k miles it had new lower control arms, ball joints, waterpump, battery, tires 60k maintainance and 1 year old paint. The only problems it had were MINOR front end damage and a bent factory rim that still held air. I paid 3000 dollars.
If it was me I would try to avoid used car dealers as they usually want top dollar and can more easily rip you off on a car. If you want a 3s, be patient and shop around until you find a worth while deal. Also make sure you know what the cars are REALLY worth. DONT let someone flash blue book value in your face. Right now cars are worth less then blue book value. Its a buyers market, take advantage. go by what you see them selling for. The guy I bought my car from was originally asking 5k, but I could tell how badly he needed to get rid of it. Learn how to negotiate. |

ahhhh a stealership...that explains it! He finished the job in an hour, then you paid him to eat lunch, and work on someone elses car for another 2 hours or so...they charge book time no matter how long it takes them.

Please tell me who can change a clutch in ONE HOUR. If you look in most service manuals it states that clutch job will be around 6-8 hours. Do you know what exactly is involved in changing the clutch. Stuff like getting axles out and droping tranny out will take half a day for proffesional and that is why they are charging like at least $400-$500 + parts. You know if changing clutches was that easy anybody would do it all day long-like changing oil. |

Half a day? 6-8 hours? Your kidding right? I, by myself, had the tranny dropped in my bro's Talon in under an hour. I couldnt finish the job cause he had to return his broken clutch to get a new one. Once he got that he and my dad hjad the thing back together and running in under 2 hours. Its not a "simple" job like changing the oil but its not difficult either.
BTW I asked a friend who worked at a garage how much they would charge to replace my clutch and he got the figures and said it would be $300 labor.

I don't know about you but most people are not that fast. Here is what is writen on http://www.stealth316.com/2-trany.htm
"We imagine that a first timer will need about 8 to 10 hours of >>diligent<< work to remove and replace everything (double that time for casual effort or to allow for problems)." |

Yeah and that is also talking about a VR4/TT tranny. A decent amount more to deal with there.
The first time we pulled the tranny it was my brother and me. We had the tranny ready to fall in 35 minutes. It took us another 20 to get it on the ground though because it got caught up. I guess it helps I have removed or helped remove several FWD trannys but still. Even my first time wasnt THAT bad. ![]() |
