Default Test Drove An Rt Today

as the title says, i drove a 93 rt today at a local car dealer. it has 130000 miles, clean carfax, and hes asking 4800 for it. however, that price is including body work (damaged quarter panel) and a little bit of paint on the front. without the body work, he said he would take 4200. well, when i drove it, i noticed the clutch slipping pretty bad in 2nd and 3rd. i was smoking the tires in 1st, but then no-go when i would shift in 2nd or 3rd. i had to wait till the rpms went back down to shift. i told him (the dealer) about it, and he disagreed about anything being wrong with the clutch. i had him talked down to 3500 as/is. he told me that a clutch wasnt hard/expensive to do; he said you could buy one for 200. i said, "ok, i'll take the car for 3700 + clutch" (that would make sense wouldnt it? 3500 + 200 if he was telling me the truth). He said, "i'm not going to fix something that isnt broken". so what i am asking, is it a good deal if i get it for 3500 w/o clutch and do the clutch myself? how hard is it to do the clutch? oh yeah, just remembered, he put a new water pump and timing belt on the day before i drove it. what's everyone think?

The clutch is like $200 but labor is like $400-$500 to change the clutch. Also if he changed timing belt and water pump he saved you like $400 in parts alone or $1000+ if good shop does it.

To change the clutch it shound't be much problem if you are good with tools but if you are not then you have a problem. If I had problems with clutch I would do it myself, I could do over a weekend easy and save myself $400.

There was a 92 rt with around 140k but it had a tt engine in it. The dealer was selling it for 4k i believe. They didn't even noticed that it was twin turbo until a friend of mine test drove it and told em stupid ass he shouldn't of said anything... they rose the price to like 5k i believe. It was a sort of teal color, which i've heard of that is pretty rare.

Nairobi Beige? Yes on a stealth that is extremely rare. And BTW I wouldn't buy that R/T..too many issues. You can get better cars for 4.8k

here is the dealer's site w/ pics:

gavric: he sort of had no choice to do the water pump since it was leaking. he said he figured he'd do the timing belt while he was at it

audible silence: what issues are your referring to with the rt?

Is it worth 3500?

Did the dealer happen to say whether he also replaced the tensioner and idler pulleys as well as the hydraulic tensioner? What about those cam seals and oil pump seal? I didn't see the body damage in the pics, but if the dealer is willing to have it fixed, I'd have him fix it.

I've always thought that when a clutch has gone bad, it slips no matter what gear you're in. It sounds rather odd to me that it has enough grab to burn the tires off in 1st, yet slip like mad in 2nd and 3rd. I'd deffinately take it to a knowledgable mechanic to be certain whether it's the clutch or not.

If not for any of the other stuff, I'd be leary of the deal just based on the fact that the dealer is so willing to reduce the price just to sell it. I mean, 200-300 isn't unusual, but he's reducing the price by over $1000. A dealer wouldn't normally knock that much off the price of a "quality" automobile. Like AudibleSilence said, you can find better cars for that price.

he didnt say anything about changing the tensioner/ idler pulleys/ or hydraulic tensioner.
If you look at the driver side quarter panel, you can see the dent. Also, the way this guy gets his cars is he goes to car auctions and gets them. I dont know if that is a reason to stay away from there? I thought it was weird to that it would smoke tires in first but wouldnt chirp in 2nd, but what else could it be than the clutch? thankx

4-500 in labor on a N/A to change a clutch? YOUR GETTING ROBBED.

150 labor is all it should be. TT's dont cost that much for labor when changing the clutch. I suggest you shop around for a new mechanic.
