Mitsubishi Stuck accelerator

Hey guys!

So I was out on a date the other night and all of a sudden, in 2nd, at around 4k rpm the accelerator cable grabbed and took the car to the 7k rev limiter and wouldnt back off. I played with the pedal to no avail. I turned it off and rolled into a side street and when i got out and checked the cable, it is way slacked out and the piece that the cable goes to that turns the butterfly in the TBI is stuck in wide open. It took some force to get it back to normal position and playing with it by hand it drops back to the normal position. However, once I got back in and started driving, somewhere in low 3rd it did it again... Again same slack and non responsive on returning to normal position. I checked and the spring is attached still properly, and if i keep it under 3500 or so it doesnt seem to catch...

Any ideas? I am leaning towards taking apart the cruise control box to see if it is doing the nasty deed. I am thinking maybe it is pulling that part all the way to its top stop and that is making it catch and not release cause it is pulling my pedal all the way to the floor when it does it.

Thanks!
Matt

check ground wires on the motor. sounds like you lost grounding to plenum making the motor ground through the throttle cable.

cure? new cable and reconnect grounds

Between your firewall and the plenum is a short flat black ground wire right below that throttle cable... make sure it's attached securely to both the fire wall and the plenum.

Only other idea I can think of would be carbon build-up around the throttle body valve/butterfly.

can this have been something as simple as the vacuum line on the non tbi side of the egr solenoid being unplugged? or was that a random find of mine that is unrelated and might the car do this again?
