Default Steering Wheel Slips!

Had a dead battery on my beloved car last night. In the process of trying to push start it, I was turning the wheel (without power steering) and it slipped. It felt like gears slipping (but very fine gears). I looked at the steering shaft as it exits that floor board and the slipping is happening outside the drivers compartment. Now if I turn all the way to the left or the right, I can get it to slip. Any ideas?

Did you check your power steering fluid level? Sometimes they can overflow when turning the wheel without it running like in your situation. Doubt this is your problem it would be something to check out.

Default Dead battery fixed my steering problem

Turns out my dead battery helped me solve a long time steering problem. My steering has always had a bit of slop. After my dead battery experience I began looking for the source of the slippage. The bolt was missing that clamps the spline of the universal joint to the rack and pinion. I assume it has been missing the entire time I've owned the car. Sure glad I found this. I had convinced myself it was the tie-rod ends.
