Default Squealing at idle unless clutch is pushed in

The lasts 2 times i've used my car, i've noticed a very very low squeal when it's just sitting in neutral. My clutch has quite a bit of slack in it, probably 1 1/2 to 2 inches. If i push the clutch in, not even all the way, but just enough to let out the slack, the noise is gone. I don't notice it any other time except when idling in neutral. Any ideas?

EDIT: forgot to mention, i have the A/C off, and every belt on the car was replaced about 3 months ago, along with most pulleys(not sure about the alternator), water pump, and crank pulley.

yep, that would be your throw out bearing. Why so much play in the pedal?

hopefully you can adjust you clutch lines and whatnot and tighten things up.. thus making it go away.. but chances are your throwout bearing is crapped out.

Replacing it is about 5 seconds, and cheap.. it's just a matter of getting to it.. the whole transmission has to come off thing.

Probably about a 2.5 hour job with a couple guys. Easy to do, just time consuming. Might as well replace the clutch while you're in there, and check your rear main seal too.

You'll need:
2.5qts fresh fluid
Drain Pan
Floor jack
2 jack stands.
.5" drive wratchet
8mm through 19mm SIX POINT sockets - except 9mm
Breaker/cheater bar
Torque wrench(optional but advised)
Clutch alignment tools if replaced.

From what i understood if it's the throwout bearing then it would make noise while the clutch is engaged, rather than when it's disengaged, i could be mistaken though.

Why would the TOB make noise if it doesn't have pressure on it? It will normally just sit there, if it's too tight against the PP, it's not adjusted correctly. It shouldn't be so loose that there's lots of play, but too tight is a much bigger problem.

Eh, I don't think I'd suspect the tob if the sound goes away when he depresses the clutch. If it was the tob it would be present only when he pushes the clutch in. I'd be more inclined to suspect a bearing going bad inside the trans. When the clutch is depressed the shafts in the trans aren't rotating. If nothing is moving inside the trans, there's no noise. I think you've got a bigger problem than just the tob but hopefully I'm wrong.

Any of you play with bearings at all? Spin a bearing with no lube. It rattles and make noise. Thats basically whats going on. When a load is put on it, the noise stops. Hydraulically actuated clutches always have the bearing in contact with the clutch face so its always spinning. AS in everything else, there are also different qualities of bearings too. I removed a completely open bearing from my car. The one I put in was good quality and was sealed. Watch out for that bad inscription "made in China" too.

This thread was useful, my car started doing the same thing a couple days ago. Is it absolutely mandatory to replace the clutch while in there if it only has about 40k on it?
