Default Sputtering at High RPMs

Hey guys, bought my 94 VR4 from a member on this site. Love the car overall and its awesome. Have had it for 4 months now no problem, but last night right when I got off work, noticed a slight hesitation and sputtering when on the gas a little. After getting a little harder on the gas, noticed the sputtering getting louder around the exhaust(sp) area. It only sputters when you are really on it after 3000rpms and/or over 10lb boost. Went home and parked it.

Next morning let it warm up completely incase it was fuel related. After taking it out, still same thing. But this time I tried going through 1st, 2nd and 3rd pretty hard incase something was up with the fuel system (thinking maybe it would clear it up somehow) Well, my luck, it did. After that hard run, it kinda-sorta knocked it back to normal. Still notice a very very slight sputter/hesitation, but overall about back to 98% (atleast feels like it).

Wanted to get some info about this before I take her in. Thanks in advance.

Btw, this is Terry Kerns old VR4 incase some of you are familar with it. Sorry I havent posted sooner to introduce myself. Been busy. Thanks in advance

Angelo

My first guess would be old plugs and possibly wires. When was the last time they were replaced? If the plugs are old and fowled up it can do that.

Sounds like plug blow-out. Try buying new ones and re-gapping them closer. I would rule out the plug wires for now, since it happens higher in the RPM band.

I doubt it's fuel related.

what have you done to my car angelo!!!! haha j/k... ya man i replaced the plugs at 96,500 miles when i sold u the car... put on NGK copper plugs and were gapped and at about .032 i think that's what matt gapped them at anyway.. they r only good for 10,000 miles or so. I'm assuming u didn't raise the boost on it either (hoping anyway unless you got it dyno-tuned). Glad the car is still in good shape overall though... have fun with her!

yeah, i'm def taking care of her. I have only put 6k on it since I got it, so it couldnt be the plugs, or could it after only 6k? But surprisingly, the problem has fixed itself, back to normal, not sure what happen or why it fixed itself. What could have caused that?

ok, now problem has come and gone again. I guess it is the plugs but that doesnt make sense. Its only had 6k on it since the last plug change and I've been driving it on highway mostly too? Oh well, I guess it will have to be checked out.

Now my next question is, do I change them myself considering I'm new to the VR4, or take it to get new plugs?

You should be fine to changing them yourself assuming that you're decently mechanically inclined and that you follow this guide on stealth316. That guide shows you pretty much every bolt that has to come out and every piece that has to come off.

I'd question rather spark plugs are the problem though because I've never heard of anybody wearing a set of spark plugs out after only 6k miles, even the coppers will usually go 10k.
