I would get a vr-4.

Sl is like a mitsu Eclipse GT.

It just feels a little heavier, and that's it.

Ownin' an SL, I can say that you don't have to worry quite as much about maintenance, and there's a bit more room to work on the motor...

But all in all, I'm wishin' every day I would have gone VR4. My car is cool, I love every minute I'm behind the wheel... but I also know I could have twin turbo, and AWD (as I may be heading back into snow country, that'd be a BIG plus)...

TT conversion is one of my later projects... and I guess SL drops the insurance rates... but I'd go VR4.

My TT has been reliable. Its not just the TTs that are going to fall apart if not taken care of by the previous owner, that is EVERY car.

Id say get a TT, youll like the NA for a while but after some time ( especially spending time on this board), youll most likely regret not getting the TT....

Ah, the endless "VR4 vs. N/A debate." As a happy N/A owner (twice over) I can only address the reliability issue. Our cars have been a dream, but we were fortunate in that both the previous owners took very good care of the cars, and so have we. We've had no major maintenance expenses other than 60K's, and I had a rust hole develop in my down pipe and upgraded to a new one from 3SX. Other than that, it's just been fluids, brakes and tires. Normal wear and tear items. Yes, the N/A's can be very reliable if well maintained, just like any car.

I also own a '97 Eclipse GSX (turbo/AWD). Side by side with my SL, it's quicker off the line, but I can pull on it once I hit third gear. The GSX is an automatic, so it's an apple to oranges comparison, and it sure ain't a VR4. It too has been reliable, and was subject to the transfer case recall, but that was resolved by the PO. Other than that, all it's needed has been an alternator.

For racing, there's no doubt you want a VR4. That additional 100 horses makes all the difference. The downside is your only option is a previously owned car, and too often these car are driven hard by owners that may not have maintained them as they should/could have. The tempatation to drive them hard cannot be resisted. I dare you.
