I have not even attempted to start car duh lol. So now it clear i gotta do the timing belt overhaul it was planned any way. My ? is now that i cant use a breaker bar to get the main pulley off i suppose i gotta use air. Also the belt is off now on the cams they are spring loaded but did i do any damage when they jumped a tooth with the car off? i tried lining one back up but it lurched forward on me spring lol. HELP!!!! did i do any damage but the belt coming off when the car was not running!!!

No damage was done...but you're right, you need to redo the timing (and DO NOT attempt to turn the car over!!!!)
You could always find a long pipe (that your breaker bar will slip into) for more leverage. Good Luck! Bob.

Eiather your paranoid or you just saved your engine since whatever let go would have the next time you fired up the engine. There would be no damage from this happening so don't worry about that. Someone correct me if I am wrong but if you only jumped one tooth it would not be enought to cause the pistons to touch valves so what you can do is crank the engine over by hand and only by hand and line up the timing marks to see if it really is off a tooth. This is assuming the belt is tight, if it's not than don't attempt this. You could do this just by looking at the cams too so you wouldent even need to remove the timing cover. If you have both intake cams off by one the cam marks will not line up, if all 4 line up your just paranoid. Again someone correct me if this is not accuate.

Actually, he's NOT being paranoid. This is actually a pretty common thing to happen (it happened to me with my Stealth, I was replacing the clutch master and accidently bumped the belt [the rear cover was off to get at some stuff] and I jumped a couple of teeth). You don't need to turn the car over to check the timing marks, you CAN gently use your breaker bar to spin the crank. If you feel ANY significant resistance...STOP. Bob. |

i turned it over buy hand one complete time no more resistance than normally turning over a motor it was bitch but i did not feel any thing like bind just the usual turns good for a few degrees then gets tough to turn. No the belt is off now i am ripping apart the low end to do a 120 anyway

I was not pressing it that hard it must have been just at that sweet spot where there is a little slack buy the water pump and it when it sprung back i heard dong dong and the intake cams where off a tooth. i then spun the motor over again buy hand till i found a slack spot and took the belt off. Thats the only time i spuun the motor over and it did not feel any different then when i was checking the belt before all this happened!
If there is a knowledgeable person i could chat with on this subject please pm your number so we can chat. My name is Ben |

Ben, thanks for your PM, I'm sorry I couldn't help you more.
I've done A LOT of things to these cars, but doing a 60K by myself (and I would NEVER offer advice on something I've not accomplished) is not under my belt. Don't feel bad about what you've done, I should have mentioned that once my rear bank jumped, I took off the front cover to check the total carnage, and when my wife came home I tried to show her what I did on the rear on the front and then the FRONT cams jumped!!! SHIT happens. Bob. |

Your name would be Hulk if you could turn the engine over by hand and smash the pistons into the valves with so much strenght you didn't even notice it. Trust me if the piston came in any kind of contact with the valves you would know it.
If you wanted to make sure 100% you could do a leak down test with the cams pulled off (not to hard to pull the cams). You wouldent even need the fancy leakdown tester if you didn't want to. All you would need is the peice to thread into the spark plug hole and hook it up to an air compressor. If you hear anykind of air in the exaust or intake somethings not right. Do you have a shop manual? If not you should get one as there are alot of details like torque specs you will need to know. Maybe try search stealth316, they must have a walk through on there. |
