today i wanted to install my shift boot and e brake boot. i did get the e brake done but i cannot seem to get the stock shift knob off...
i searched and found out i need to turn it counter clockwise... well no big deal, well it was i tried and was able to turn it a quarter, my friend who is a hell of alot bigger then me was only able to give it one last quarter turn. so right not its facing 180 degrees in the opposite direction. now at that point me and him gave up, his suggestion was to cut it off. but i prefer my stock shift knob. so then he left and i tried turning it again. i used the old e brake cover and wrapped it around the knob so i wouldnt damage it. then i used my oil filter pliers to turn it, its very very difficult and in the end i thought i turned it more. then i finally realized i have litterally have been turning the leather on the knob .right now both of my arms are in pain and i would like to know if its easier to take the shifter out to put the cover on. also if any other ideas involve using pliers is there away to get the stress marks out of the leather, would shoe polish work ? thanks for your help guys. |

You could always just use pliers to get it off, and then buy a new OEM shift knob. I think they're like $25. I've never heard of someone having that hard of a time getting the shift knob off though..

shouldnt be THAT hard, put some kind of towel or something around it and use a large wrench, that should give you leverage and hopefully the towel wont eff your knob, if your getting rid of it then just have at it with a some pliers

Something must be up, since it should only get easier once you turn it a tiny amount... unless all your "turning" was just the leather wrap, in which case, I have no idea. I took mine off probably for the first time in its life the other week and it wasn't great, but easy enough.
Speaking of shift knobs, someone said $25 for a new OEM one... where would you get one that cheap? Leather-wrapped 5 speed? |

I was thinking, If you have ever looked in a stock shift knob, it has plastic threads. Maybe someone has stripped them out and used gorilla glue or some sort of epoxy to hold it on. My thoughts..

update, yeah i think somebody glued it or something because i mean damn, me and a 260 pound guy who is fairly strong could not get it off. so i ended up taking the whole shifter out and cutting my new boot so it would fit. looks good. then while it was out i somehow managed to turn it 180 degrees back so it would look normal.
also would shoe polish work to recondition the leather because i did put stress marks on the leather when using those pliers. thanks guys l8r. |
