Goddamn lifter tick.
|
I went out for a drive in my VR-4 last night. Just some good spirited driving on abandoned roads. Took it up to 100 a couple times but I wasn't flogging it just 3/4 throttle and practicing my shifting. On my way back about 1 mile from my house when I have slowed back down to about 40 a hear a strange grinding noise for a second or two and am like oh shit but before I could react and shut the car down the belt snaps. I immediately killed it and pulled of to the side of the road. The serpentine belt snapped in half and was really tightly wrapped around the pulleys. I managed to pull it off with a bit of grunt work. Got the car towed back to my house by a friend. Now the largest pulley (I don't know what it is called) is loose and will wobble up and down. All the others are tight and right where they should be. I was thinking that it may be the key that had come out of the pulley and was causing this wobbling which shouldn't be a big deal to get replaced. However my father says I may have broken my crank. What is likely wrong with my car and how much will it cost to fix?

Get it on the track

I would guess you just broke the crank shaft pulley. Almost the same thing happened to me when a the power steering belt broke. They are not very expensive and easy to replace.

Hope upon hope that it didnt get into your t belt. A broken crank isnt going to happen like that LOL. What probly happened is the crank pulley seperated (shitty rubber fell apart hence why I DONT like so called "harmonic dampners") and it ate the belt and shredded it.

That is what I thought but really wasn't sure. I am pretty sure that my timing belt is fine. The serpentine was wrapped pretty tightly around the pulleys so I don't think it got into anything else.

Those acc belts almost always find their way into the timing belt. It's crazy. Hopefully yours is OK. Have you done anything with it yet? It would only take a few minutes to figure out if you are OK.

All I have done so far is take the broken belt out and check out my broken pulley. I am not much of a mechanic other than really basic stuff (slowly learning). If it is pretty easy you can tell me how to check and I will look it over tomorrow.
