Default Quick Coolant Question.

anyway i was doing an oil change on my car and realized i was leaking coolant (looks to be from the water pump). so lower the car and top off the overflow tank (to start compensating for the coolant im losing.

now a week after that oil change my ECT gauge decides it wants to work. so the needle works it way up to 3/4 of the gauge. (im not sure what line represents what temperature) so all of my destinations, they are short they are around 2, 3 miles my SL decides to overheat 50 to 75 feet from my destination. so i just shut my car off and coast the rest of the way.

two days ago i put a new thermostat in (my heat in my car doesnt work) i had to reuse the old o ring because i accidently bought a cork gasket. there is no leak when i reused the old o ring. but i still over heat and there is still fluid left in the overflow tank.

now this is my theory, when i put in the new thermostat i did not put coolant into the rad cap. thus with the same coolant being in there i am overheating because there is not enough coolant to get hot to open up the thermostat. (im just having a hell of a hard time to find a turkey bastor on my spare time so i can put the coolant in my overflow tank into my rad cap.

but the thing i sorta dont get is, if i have a full over-flow tank whats not causing the vaccum to occur to suck the needed coolant back into my engine ? is it because my water pump leaks ? or is it because my radiator cap is defective ?

but thats where im stuck at now. so if anyone has any guesses or possible answers dont hesistate to shoot them at me. thanks for the help l8r.

yes your water pump is on its way out... time to do the 60K/120K (which ever one applies to you)... hurry up by the way cause the waterpump is connected to the timing belt and well, you get the hint....

i'll be doing the 180k tune up , im at 155k now. anyways i added some coolant into my rad cap. around half a quart maybe a little bit more. anyway now it over heats quicker... i think i might have added too much coolant ?! i was thinking even if i did wouldnt it leak out the water pump ? so im coming home from harbor freight and shutting my car off and coasting most of the ways.

anyways my car sat outside (for 10 mins) in around -10 degree weather. i come outside with my new laser therm i bought and i was scanning the top of my motor (i didnt get a shot of the block). here are the readings.
Intake plenum= 165 F
Thermostat housing= 185 F
Front valve cover= 195 F

it was dark so i really couldnt get anything. what do ya think ? btw i just bought the pump and the only time i have to install is in jan. my rad cap feels warm to the touch and my lower hose felt warm and the upper one didnt really feel warm (it was hard to tell because it was very cold and dark outside). im going to check up on stealth316 l8r.
