Yeah, then I don't see any harm in that. If you have a reliable car already that runs and drives, and have the extra money to buy the car for something like 1,200, why not take a shot. Just gradually work on it, start saving, and at the same time start taking apart the car and cleaning what is on it, and buying what is needed. I'd see what he says about 1,200, just tell him the car truthfully isn't worth what he expects to get out of it.

Well I don't know how to do the work... yet. However I do have a friend who is a professional mechanic and he's going to help me repair the car. Basically... I want to finally know how to fix my own car so I can stop paying a shit ton for a mechanics labor time.

Still think it's a good idea?

I'm never good at bargaining. But what you're saying here I completely agree with. More then likely it's going to require a lot of labor time to get this Frankenstein up and running. Any pointers that would help me keep the price low?

Make sure your friend has time and is loyal to you and the project I would say. Anyone can dismantle a car, but putting it back together is a different story. Make sure he helps you out the whole time and shows you what to do, even buy him something, or give him some money to help you out, and order a pizza while working on it, just make sure both of you are having a good time doing it, then there won't be a problem of both of you guys staying interested in the project. The last thing you want is for the car to be taken apart, and him bailing out on the project.

Yep. He's my bandmate and I've known him for the last 3 years. Great friend. I've been around them taking cars apart and then back together. It takes quite awhile, even when you know what you're doing. I'll be speaking with the guy tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted.

Tell the guy what you honestly think about the car. Cite specific examples and costs to repair. Turbos, 700 dollars, paint job, 3 grand, etc, etc. Those are just rough figures.

Once you have the car, remember, stealth316 and this site. There are guides for a lot of repairs, and members here have done it before, so the knowledge is invaluable. I wasn't a mechanic before I bought this car, and you can see my mod list, I've done almost every one myself, in my one car garage without air tools or a lift.

Thanks for quoting stealth316. I'm reading through it now.... wow. Oh how I love the internet

Secondly, Id say it's fair to quote rebuilding prices? Or do you think I should quote new prices when bargaining with the guy? Meaning if I talk about how the turbos are in bad shape... should I tell him it costs X amount of money to buy new ones or X amount to rebuild them?

Thanks again

X amount of money to buy new one's. Nobody wants to go through even more hassle on rebuilding a rebuild. If that made sense. So maybe 800-900 for turbo's, two grand for a jdm engine etc..(I don't know what they really go for, just making an example)

So I left a message on the guys phone. I offered him $1,200 cash. I have a feeling he's going to decline. But he still hasn't sold this and it's been up there for a week now. Just thought I'd give you guys an update. I'll let you know when he responds.
