Hey.
First time changing spark plugs Went to a shop a few days ago and i got spark plugs for my 97 vr-4. I got NGK Platinums for 11$ apiece. Came back home and checked out the NGK website to make sure i got the right spec for the vr-4. NGK recommends PFR6J-11 for my car, and the guy at the store gave me PFR5J-11 plugs... What is the difference, if any, and does anyone think i should go back and exchange them for 6's? thanks

I could be wrong, but I believe the "5's" are just one heat range colder (and a lot of guys who are modded here like to run colder plugs).
Lets wait to see if someone backs me up....but I really don't think they'd hurt anything.... Bob.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking to run higher boost then the coppers gain you something, but you half to change them every 10-15k miles, whereas the plats will work perfectly fine in a stock or lightly modified VR4 and you don't half to change them nearly as often (likely at least 60-70k miles).

OK so i checked the litterature oni the NGK website...
the smaller the heat number the hotter the plug. One heat range unit is equivalent to dissipating about 70 degrees C worth of heat energy. This means that the clolder plugs can dissipate more heat guiding it away from the combustion chamber. So the PFR5J-11 is a hotter plug. Supposed to run colder plugs in modded cars wit hperformance gains. They also say that running too hot a plug can cause pre-ignition and severe engine damage so here's my answer. I'm getting PFR6J-11s tomorrow! Thought i'd clear this up. Anyways thanks guys |
