Hey guys, I have a 92 vr-4 with 53k on it. I just recently started to get what sounds like really bad lifter tick. I just changed my oil with durablend 10w-30 and a quart of risolene. Today, my dad and I were looking at the engine and we started to unplug the spark plug wires to see if we could narrow it down to a cylinder. It went away if we disconnected the wire to the number 5 cylinder, that's the only one it would go away with. I don't really notice the engine ticking on startup as much as when it is warm. It ticks really loud from 2-3k RPM, but not with the wire to the #5 cylinder disconnected.
Do you guys think that the problem is the lifter in #5 or could it be something else? Also any suggestions on how to get rid of it or do I need new lifters? Sorry about the long post but thanks in advance for any replies! |

Hey, I don't think that would be lifter noise. Just for the simple reason that if you unplug the spark plug the lifters are still getting hydraulic pressure to them, regardless. So it sounds like you might have rod bearings, wrist pin, etc. Don't know if this helped but here you go anyways. Once you take away the energy from the plug it can't fire no more, right?! Right. So thus your taking energy away from the combustion chamber. Taking pressure off of the piston and further down.

Take your oil pan off see if you have a spun bearing its good inurance if your crank is still ok DONT DRIVE IT until you do that. I had a spun bearing 3 times and on these cars it sounds like its coming from the heads I made that mistake the first time it happened. I had it come from both heads too so i guess you head it in the head which rod is knocking last time it was #4 the 2 times before that it was #5.
Good Luck
