Default K&N FIPK or PMP's Intake Kit

Is it really that much more worth it to get the K&N FIPK?

What's the difference between the K&N FIPK or PMP's Intake Kit?

I'm only asking because it's about a $100 price difference and Jason from PMP claims that his kit is just as good as the FIPK and that the only difference in the two is that their filter is a little more round than the oval shape of the FIPK.

Any input is good input! Thanks!

If you get the FIPK get the one for the 2nd gen DSM as they use the same MAS as we do.

The FIPK for the DSM is larger and CHEAPER than the one for the 3s and will fit our MAS. IIRC the FIPK for the 3s runs around 180 and the one for the DSM's run for around 100 new.

Oh damn.

That's within my price range right now!

Would you be able to link me to a decent site?

I'm in class right now.

K&N has a long running reputation for quality. I would never take an upstarts word that their product is just as good...of course he would say that. How much is your engine worth to you? If you're sucking dirt into your engine, you are sanding the cylinder walls down. It's just not worth the risk to me.

I have the FIPK kit on my stealth. Amazing. Lifetime warranty, CARB Certification sticker, and it actually filters better as it get's dirtier. I clean mine every 6 months or so because we have a lot of blowing dust here. I've used K&N in every car I own. First thing I upgrade. I paid $180 for my FIPK kit, never thought twice about it. Cheap protection vs what it cost me to rebuild it earlier this year. No way I'd ever take someone's word that thir product is as good or better...gotta hear a qualified third party say it. K&N has loads of supporters. For a reason.

(The DSM filter is not road legal, and you'll probably have to pull it for emissions)

Thanks for all the information jbavousett. K&N is definitely a reputable brand.

How come the DSM filter isn't road legal?

I know the price is cheaper, but is it worth going with the DSM FIPK?

Here's everything you need to know...

Stealth 316 - K&N Guide

At first, I got an Aircharger, but it rubbed on my hood, and I really do not want any dirt getting past it. I still have it sitting on the floor in my garage. Rather have the filter that fits.

Our kit uses a Genuine K&N filter. with a 4.5 inch opening and the 4.5 inch adapter. This is NOT a look a like K&N. It will come new in the box. has the same million mile warranty. oh and by the way if you want the DSM FIPK send me a pm.. I can get you that as well.

Jason

Well then, I have a slightly rubbed one sitting on the floor of my garage. I'll sell it cheap if you want it.

They're both real K&N filters, so it's really no difference, unless if you live in CA, and need the CARB expemption that the FIPK has. I don't think you'll see any performance difference between the two.

The FIPK does come with brackets to hold the MAS up though, which none of the other kits I've seen do. I have a matrix filter I bought used from someone on here, and made my own bracket to hold it up for about $5 worth of material. Most people don't bother, but I didn't care for the filter rubbing on my inner fender and taking the paint off.

I'd just get the PMP one, and make your own support for it if you feel it's necessary. I used some 20 ga. sheet metal and bent it into an L shape, cut out a hole for the MAS opening, and drilled some holes to mount it to the inner fender and to the MAS itself. You could also just use something like the metal straps that come with stereos, or plumber's tape to make a bracket.
