wow i wish you luck, but i forsee problems with fitment later. I really hope im wrong. Great undertaking though. Keep posting picks. oh and you can weld with the windows in/up. Just use some leather to cover it up, or that fire resistant fabric.

Update...a friend was further along in the process than I, so I let him have
my donor roof for his sunroof conversion....turned out indistinguishable from original. Beautiful job. I'd show ya'll but he's doing the write-up w/pics....may take a while as he's a busy guy. My R/T is next (holding off on the TT), and then the biggy...93 Stealth (sig) conversion to 2nd gen Targa... w/ smoked Saratoga top. ![]() |

here's a few process pics.....sorry if they look like "spy" pics...but they kinda are. I am trying to isolate the top w/o giving away the rest of the mods/conversions. I will answer questions....if you have any. The end result looks just like it came from the factory.

Why did you have to cut the top of the windshield frame? I thought you would just be able to drill out the spot welds to remove the top skin, then weld on the new one... maybe I don't have a good idea of what is exactly involved.

The sunroof conversion is complete but he's trying to finish the car before he goes in the Guard. It works as I described earlier....locate donor and remove glass (1/4's, rear hatch and windshield...cut thru A-B-C pillars leaving ~6in of the pillar attached to the donor roof (this keeps roof in perfect structural condition until ready for tranplant)..... remove all hardware and interior trim from project car and donor roof.... remove windshield and rear hatch..mark their position on the rails...along the entirety of the rails, drill the welds only enough to separate the metal ..when that's done you are left with nothing between the rails....cut the donor the same way.....then tack-fit the roof using the windshield as a guide. When fitment is achieved....weld and restore finish...reattach trim.
No additional re-enforcement is needed since the original sunroof actually is more rigid than the plain roof. |
