Default Cold Air Intake?

Just wondering... i have been checking into air intakes and all i can find are short ram intakes. Are there legitimate cold air intakes for N/A DOHC's?

There are a few cold air induction systems you can find. Check out the for sale section and check out the vendors. I would just go with a K&N FIPK myself. There is really no more performance your going to gain from having your filter behind your front bumper. Plus if you ever go over a puddle or drive when it's raining chances are your going to suck that up.

Completely agree, a cold air intake is not going to give you significant gains over a warm air intake (unless an extra 1hp is worth giving up to an extra $100). Not to mention the problem with taking in water. If you're going to a buy an intake just get a cheap one off of ebay (not that I'm against our vendors but dayum are they expensive!) they have a nice shiny arm and most even come with a filter. Also don't spend extra for the "ram air" forms; since it's under your hood, the only thing you'll be "ramming" is your head into the wall for wasting money on a filter with an extra hole in it.

I own an ebay intake, (cheapest one I cold find, it was $30) and it looks great. It also came with the MAF adaptor, and has the same performance boosts as an expensive one. No point wasting any extra cash IMO for a simple metal pipe.

OK, I''m a little buzzed at the moment so I am going to post as best as I can.

CAI's are NOT worth it. I had one years ago and took in water twice. Both times I was lucky enough that the water hit the MAS and stalled the car. There is no major gain from a CAI to a short ram. Even short ram isnt much gain over stock.

Dont spend $200 on an intake for a NA. Its not worth the money.

another option with an open element filter, although more expensive, would be to get one of the fiberglass hoods 3sx offers that have the scoop that routes the air over the filter.. which more or less accomplishes the same thing. another thing to do with a true CAI is to get a bypass valve, basically when it detects a pressure drop like when ur filter gets water in it, the valve opens.. I know AEM makes them.

I've heard of several people who have had issues with their cars swallowing the internals of bypass valves.

Make life easier, don't waste your money on a CAI. The effort it takes to install one alone makes it not worth it.

You have to cut metal away from the fender area in the engine bay.

I am pretty sure mine is short ram air (No cutting required ) - but its after market, I am one of the people who paid $200 for one and I actually love it. Its added a significant increase in gas mileage (Probably 4mpg) and I felt a slight increase in power after I put it on.. Is it worth the money? Probably not, but it looks pretty under the hood and sounds amazing. I bought mine from ebay, its made by HPS (hiprospeed.)

Anyway, if you're looking to spend the money, thats a good one speaking from experience, I spent almost $800 on intakes trying different ones out and that was the only one I liked. K&N wasn't bad but the stock air hose is terrible and I hated it, too restrictive in my opinion, so a freer flowing one was the best. I then tried the K&N on a metal pipe from ebay that cost $40, helped a little, not enough to care though. Then I tried a few others from Advanced Auto Parts and none of them were worth a shit. A little hint, if it doesn't have an adapter for your mass air flow sensor - Don't get it. You need that, I found that out REAL quick (I was used to working on carbureted cars where that thing didn't exist )

So its probably not worth the money for the small gain, but I personally love my HPS intake, in my opinion, its done wonders and sounds amazing (You can actually HEAR it sucking the air in, pretty neat.)

You can PM me if you want any other information on it, I can get you a link to the guys ebay store if you're interested. I am also in Columbus, if ya ever wanna meet up - I can show you mine and let you be the judge for yourself.

Hate to tell you Josh but its all placebo. The stock intake is not restrictive at all. Also you may, MAY, have gotten a 1mpg increase and that would be from the open element air filter. Not the intake tube itself. You also may have gotten a whopping 1 hp increase. If that.

Fact of the matter is you wasted a shit ton of money to get a little sound and a little bling.

My $40 ebay intake, that I actually didnt even pay anything for, adds just as much performance and sound as your $200 intake. You got took.

well thanks for the advice everybody. i definitely think i will go with a short ram intake. I really like the injen intake. Any personal experiances with that one? I am also going to check out that HPS intake too, thanks josh3000 Also, i just got a cat back exhaust which is obviously less restrictive than the stock exhaust, so with more air from a intake going in shouldn't there be a pretty decent gain in HP?
