My money is on the EGR CEL in the 94 and the o2 sensor CEL in the 92.

Get those loggers man!

the check engine light is an amber light. that means its not a serious problem. This sounds stupid but make sure that your gas cap is clicked at least 3 times. If its not it will cause loss of suction with the fuel pump and will cause the light to come on. But almost always when the amber is on its something to do with the exhaust system.

Please do not post if you are unsure of what you post of.

A CEL is a CEL. Period. How do you know it has something to do with the exhaust? There are several sensors that could trip it.

And as for the gas cap, not on a hybrid. It has nothing to do with "suction at the fuel pump" I ran around without a gas cap for a week.

Yeah, nevermind that amber/red BS that was posted. Early 3/S (including yours) had a red check engine light. In '93 they made the light amber instead of red.

Probably the EGR valve. My check engine light came on and the car acted fine. Took it to Mitsubishi, they code checked it, and fixed it.

Clint. Post that EGR block thing I don't have the link. 40mph in 4th gear sounds prime to turn CEL on. same with the 94. I had this happen 2X and both was EGR valve. comes on if
1. runs under load for 30 sec.
2. runs between 1800-2200 RPM
3. Coolant is ^180* F
