Default 9B Turbo Difference

Whats the difference between a 1st gen 9b turbos versus a 2nd gen 9b turbo? I heard someone say that the 2nd gen's have a larger lip on the turbo? Can someone show me a pic of a second gen turbo? Also are the turbine wheels the same or different? Rep will be given to the person that helps me out. Thanks

nothing as far as I've ever heard. ther is a stock HP difference between the 1st and 2nd gens but that's because of a soloniod in the boost controller not the turbos.

This is a copy and paste out of an old thread of mine:
Quote:
Well me and Rob Beck have been talking about the turbine lip size recently, and it turns out it's a little more complicated.
His car is a 94, and he sent me his cores, both of them had the big lip size on them. My 93 had small lip on them, and my 92 has small lip on them.
Up until last week it appeared that every dsm 13g had the small lip turbine side. But I bought a 13g last week off a 94 that has the larger lip on it. So it would appear that both lip sizes were made for both turbos (9b, 13g), and that they switched from small lips to big lips in 94 for both cars.

1) As far as I know there is no difference between a properly adapted dsm 13g and, say, TEC's or DR's 13g kit. DSM 13g's are the exact same compressor/turbine combination as TEC or DR, only difference you might see is if you do not fully rebuild the turbos, in which case getting brand new turbos any of the companys that offer them would be better.
2) I have done it to 2 of my cars, a 93 and a 92. I had no installation problems other then the stock rear turbo being difficult and not wanting to come off my 92. And, seeing how I have gotten no complaints from anyone that has bought a pair of my adapted turbos, I wouldn't think anyone would have a problem with installation, as long as your lip sizes are matched up.
3) Like gatecrasher said, everything is covered in those threads pretty much. If anyone has any questions about adapting the turbos feel free to PM me, or catch me on aim.
The turbos in those pictures look like 15Gs.

So these are definitely not the stock 9B turbos? Also why are the numbers scratched out on both turbos?

the serial number is still there though. They were probably converted to 15gs or something since they scratched out the ID code.

I recently noticed this and searched and searched and couldn't find a single thread about it, guess I was searching for the wrong terms. I was pissed, one of the exhaust housings on a first-gen turbo I was swapping had some of the most rusted difficult bolts to get off it, I figured "why not swap one from another turbo." I was pissed as hell to find out the exhaust housing wouldn't fit on right. Took me a while to figure out exactly just what was going on.
