Default 6-speed

I saw the production numbers for the different years of the VR 4, but just wondering how rare the 6-speed transmission is. What years came out with the 6-speed, and how many did they make?

94-99 for the 6 speed, 91-93 for the 5 speed.

Yup. If you want a 6 speed VR4 it'll be in the 1994-1999 years. Prior to that the VR4's come with a 5 speed manual but some people have done a 6 speed swap.

Yup, you have to change a bunch of stuff but it's definately doable.

You'd need the 6 speed trans (of course), transfer case, driveshaft or at least the front piece, differential, and probably the shifter cables too. Axles are the same for front and rear.

I did mine and it was by far the best mod.

I was told that 1994 had some 5 speeds produced and some 6 speeds in the vr4, but I take it that in the years after that, only 6 speeds were produced in the vr4's?

What you may have been told is only the vr-4 and rt/tt had the 6 speed, n/a had 5 speed or auto

I think there are more 91-93 made than the total 94-99 model run.
I think it is even as high as a 2 to 1 ratio.
