I have a 1996 VR4, it has been babied its entire life and has just a few miles over 20k. I am just about to go BPU. I have had a few people say I should do the 60k since the parts are so old, and a few more say Its not necessary, just figured I'd get the overall consensus.

I would, I feel its a must for any car I buy, unless theres a receipt to prove it was done recently I don't know what that person had been doing with the car or how many of those 20k miles the car just sat and allowed to dry rot. Personally it gives me peace of mind to know that I did it, and did it correctly on my own time. I guess thats my better to be safe than sorry mentality, but whats the changing all that now vs. having to pay down the road. Thats my take on it, do what you feel is best and good luck with the car.

The car was stored every winter, and obviously not driven that much, however it was stored in a climate controlled garage and parked on carpet if that makes any difference on the condition of the parts. Its not like it was left out in the elements.

I am a very hard person to convince I guess you could say, for me personally if I am going to have a nice car I'll do everything right the first time and there will hopefully be no fixing my mistakes. Even so just sitting is not the best for the parts but I guess it could wait like 10k miles or so although I just like knowing its done and out of the way and I don't have to worry about it for a while.

If it were mine, I'd probably put a belt on it just because It's 12 years old.. I doubt I'd do a full 60K if all the bearings passed a visual inspection.
That's basically what I did with mine.. The motor I just put in mine only had 20k or so on it since it was rebuilt, but it was stored for several years before I used it. So I put a belt on it before putting it back in service.

I'd suggest doing the timing belt and both accessory belts as well as their tensioner. The water pump and all should still be fine as it's more of a mileage wearing item rather than a time wearing problem. The belts will definitely start to get brittle and could be a major problem if they brake.

If your going to get the belt done. I'd suggest bringing it to a shop that knows how to do it. I brought mine to the Mitsu dealer in my town for the 60k and the screwed up my ac belt and the timing is off a teeth or two.

Do it unless the previous owner has proof it was done recently. I forget the year count, but it's something like say 60k or 4 years, and that car is certainly older than 4 years old.
