Default 1991 VR4 questions

I missed my chance on a 94 r/t tt that was for sale and I knew a friend of a friend that has a 91 vr4. I stopped in and talked to him yesterday and he said that he'd be willing to sell his. Here's a little background on it:
It's got 158k miles on it, and has a few mods on it; Intake (FIPK, I believe), exhaust (HKS super dragger), turbo xs rfl bov, and a boost and afr gauge in a pod. Oh and a chrome y-pipe.
It's in decent condition and according to his dad it had been completely gone through at 96k miles. The 120k was done then so I figured I'd do the 120k/180k when I got it.
I've read up a bit and this is what it sounds like I'd be replacing:
Crank pulley (its wearing out and squeaking)
general timing belt stuff
water pump
oil pump
spark plugs and wires
fuel filter

And since it has a lifter tick maybe 99 lifters if ATF/ seafoam don't fix it.
I've also read that VSS would be a good thing to replace for prevenative maintenance while you're in there, but since I'm extremely mechanically inclined I'd hopefully find a member that could help me with that and the rest of the tune up (anyone out there in mn?)

The battery was dead when I got there yesterday, but he charged it over night and it started right up when I got there. The active aero and ecs still works so that's a plus. He also has a body kit he'd throw in for 100 (there's a small crack on the rear bumper so I figure that'd be a good replacement; I know most of you hate body kits, but it's a good replacement)

I'll post up some pictures tomorrow while I'm at school because my computer is really slow at home.

Unless you're getting it for $3500 or something. I would buy a different VR4. That one is going to be a money pit.

Well, since a friend of mine had me go talk to him, he's pretty much giving me a damn good deal. (I think, but that's a reason why I went on here to see what you guys think before I get it)

Just looking at the facts you've posted, it would have to be a very nice deal to even think about taking it. The paint/body has seen better days and it has mileage against it. Your plan, if you should decide to purchase it, sounds good, but don't be surprised if there are a lot of other things that will need to be done to it (& be quite pricey). I figured mine was a good deal for the mileage and recent work/new parts that has been put into it, but I'm continuing to track down more problems here and there and fixing them the correct way, which seems to cost quite a bit (~$800-$1,000 for relatively smaller problems).

ehh, unless it's dirt cheap, I would wait. It seems on Mitsubishi's(well at least mine, and my friends Eclipse), with this mileage you're starting to look at suspension wear out problems, on top of what already may be wrong with it.
I'd say make sure you check the struts and strut mounts for one thing, as well as steering rack, ball joints, tie rods, etc. Now also, you say it has the lifter tick and you want to put the 99 lifters in, you might as well as do the head gaskets while you're doing a job that big, and they're near the end of their life i'm sure, and while you're in there, do the VSS, and while you're at that, do the timing, water pump etc it all adds up in there. Not to mention the condition of the turbo's. If the rear one is giving you any trouble at all, I would do that while doing everything in the upper end of the engine, just due to the fact it'd be much easier to get to. Now, that was only for making it run nice, move onto the paint. If you want the car to look nice, you're most likely going to need a good paint job on that thing, a good engine bay cleaning, and underbody cleaning, possible reupholster the seats, and if you want a wing on it, add another couple hundred there. Just giving you a heads up on the worst possible situation, but it's definitely not out of question, at least within a little while, that's what you're going to be looking at to do.
