Default Re-paint

Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting a GTO repainted. The paint is faded and it needs a new coat anyway, so I was thinking of doing a colour change while I'm at it. It's a faded black right now, but I was thinking of converting it to a darkish blue. Possibly a pearlescent black-blue. Or, I may just keep it black.

I like the idea of a nice metallic blue, because not only would it look good, but I'd most likely be able to leave the non essential parts (door jams, under hood, interior, etc.) black. As long as the blue is dark enough, or I do the pearlescent, then it shouldn't be too noticable. It should save me a significant amount of heart-ache (and money) if I only have to worry about the exterior.

Thoughts, opinions, comments?

I recommend removing anything you possibly can before it goes to the paint shop, unless you are certain that they'll do it. I mean the tailights, turn signals, license plate(s), and anything else that you may want painted on the outside. I'd also make sure that the fuel door is open, so that they may mask the gas cap, but paint the inside of the fuel door. You may have to pay for extra sanding, depending on how bad of a shape the paint is now.

Just to give a little input.
1. If you do go with a dark pearl blue, expect to pay $3000+ for a good paint job that doesn't look like ass and will last more than a couple years.
2. If you just go with dark blue, expect to pay $2000+ for a paint job that doesn't look like ass and will last more than a couple years.
3. Whatever color you choose, PLEASE for the love of God, paint the door jambs. You can get away with not painting the engine bay, but every time you open your doors you're going to be reminded of how crappy it looks. And it will only be a couple hundred bucks more to do them, so do it right the first time.

The body-work, AAAHHHHHH make it stop! I don't want to do any more bondo!

I believe post above, he meant for option #2 stay black and $2,000. (#1 $3,000 with doorjambs painted). He is acurate on those prices for a good job at a decent shop.

taz is right on removing everything yourself unless you want to pay them to (and make sure they do it)... [body shop guys remove stuff themselves]

Quick paint jobs with crappy tape-jobs around everything and nothing removed are obvious to those who look. Also if old paint isn't properly sanded everywhere first, your new paint will start chipping off easily pretty quick.
