Just finished installing a 3.5L into my 96 n/a, bolted up the transmission, filled it with ATF-4 and started the car with no problem. The shilt lever recognizes all the gears but does not seem to engage forward or reverse and the axles are free to spin by hand. Cleaned all the electrical connections I could find that are associated with the transmission. Transmission worked fine before the conversion and was overhauled in 2007. Supposedly the torque converter will fill itself with fluid. Any suggestions on what/where I should focus my attention to remedy this situation. Thanks.
Replaced the fluid, about 5 + quarts, figured the TC had some left in it. It is reading high, don't know if it is circulating, will maybe try a clear hose between the cooler nipples, see if the fluid is moving. I am shifting the transmission from the engine compartment shifting lever. The transmission makes a slight whirring/clicking noise when I put it in R or D. Have ran the motor maybe 30 minutes.
You are not gonna be happy. I bet you didn't have the torque converter in all the way and when you started the motor you trashed the pump.
been there. Your probably better off buying a used transmission if this is the case. If you drop the transmission and can't slide the torque converter off, then thats exactly what happened. Only way you'll get the torque converter back off is by lots of force and technique and watching your torque converter fly 4 feet up in the air.

I am not doubting what you say, as you most certainly know more about it than I do. Was hoping for something less severe, such as a defective solenoid valve, sensor or such. I know I did not follow any set protocol(s) for re-attaching the TC/AXT to the new motor. The TC was still bolted to the flywheel, I slid that onto the transmission shaft and then bolted the bell housing to the block and then the four bolts attaching the engine flex plate to the flywheel. Had to spin the flywheel to get the (4) bolts to line-up. It would seem the TC would then be positioned correctly///fixed position ?????
Is replacing the pump an impossible fix for a novice ? And if I drop the transmission and the torque converter comes off easy, maybe it's something else ?? Thanks for your feedback
