Default Lost 5th gear and blew out end cap housing on transmission

Video explains all. Keyan took it apart & recorded.

Was driving a female friend home and I lost 5th. It would stay in if I held it. Turns out the nut that holds 5th on unthreaded itself, locked itself against the end cap housing, cracking it & messing up the threads in the nut and the shaft.

I think I'm looking at buying another transmission I might be able to savlage this and fix it but 1st, 3rd, and 5th synchro's are going so it would probably a good idea to fix it all at once.

Does anyone have a trans I can buy that uh opertates?

I'm also thinking about going through getting the 94TT, and using it's AWD trans as a FWD. welding up the VCU and such. Thoughts?

Thats usually not the nut that comes loose either.

You should be able to salvage that trans to make it work. I wouldn't put the TT trans in because the car would become an utter dog due to the gearing.

If I put the tt trans on I'd obviously tt it =P 6spd fwd tt sounds delightful in my book, its just a matter of funding such a project.

Well my 1st gear synchro is shot, for the last 2 years I've had to put it in second and then go to first when starting from a stop every time. When drag racing or on it, I usualy grind 3rd. 5th gear grinds occasionaly and reverse grinds 50% of the time. I'd REALLY rather get another trans, it's been a pain in the ass for some time and it's really the only part of the car that IMO makes the car everything but awesome.

I know, its usualy the top nut from what I was told, It didn't back far enough off to break anything until I moved it from the grass to my driveway so I had a nice flat surface to jack it up on. I drove it about 30 feet, 15 foward, 15 back. As we were jacking it up fluid started leaking out of my freshly made hole.

Looking at it, replacing the trans shouldn't be too bad of an adventure, being its an n/a. I wish there was an option so I could change gearing for a little more punch, and still have 5th for mpg's however thats not exactly available to do lol.

Everything's effing breaking this month, I could have easily funded 15g's with this month's repair costs, argh. I have like $700 at this moment.

those are where the threads are utterly stripped. as the nut backed off it only went as far as to hit the case, once it hit the case and got traction against the cover the spinning shaft stripped the half of the threads that were still on the output shaft.

Looks interesting. I was so lost when you had told me the intermediate shaft nut was the one that came off. As stealthee said that normally is not the one since that part of fifth is splined to the shaft it doesnt tend to back off. Damn man.

Might as well upgrade 5th gear while you in there for another $200 I am thinking. Gain some highway gas mileage.

TT trans not worth doing. Expensive and you are going to have to change a lot more then just the trans. Going to need a clutch + pressure plate and a flywheel at minimum. CV shafts too I believe.
