to buy a VCU would cost an arm and leg, but to buy a [Good] s/h box would run into maybe $1500 and thats if they can guarentee the box? a DOA VCU would be free then the welding after but thats if the DOA VCU isnt split like a banana skin and fouling the casing.

They use the same center diff as the 2nd gen US DSMs. I believe when they break their TC output shafts, they still send power to the front wheels. So with that in mind, wouldn't need to do anything. But to be sure, you could wled up the center diffs spider gears, or I believe they sell a center diff locker for cheap. That way you will not have to replace any welded parts when you go AWD.

Sell it to and AWD guy and buy a DOA VCU to weld.
I have a two questions since I am sort of new. What's a VCU? And what's a DOA VCU?

I have a welded up VCU. Willing to trade it for a good VCU. If your going FWD-TT this is your awesome deal. The hard work of converting the VCU is already done and has already completed less then 5000 miles. The welded VCU wont go bad and isnt going to wear out.

Its a differential between the front and rear. You pull it out of the transmission on the AWD cars. DOA = Dead On Arrival

Thanks I didn't know, now I know. So everyone that wants to convert their front wheel drive 3s/stealth to awd has to get that part from a part out 3s/stealth or what? Can you order from the dealer?

No I'm unique to this situation because I took an AWD Getrag and converted it to FWD by Welding Solid My VCU and removing the Output Shaft that goes to the Rear end.

Other FWD cars that buy a AWD getrag need to remoe their VCU and weld it up. I would trade them straight up for their good VCU. I'd be giving them a Properly welded FWD VCU. They would not need to worry about all the work that is involved with removing the Scilicon via blow torch and then welding all the spider gears. Its alot of work that people dont have the tools to do.

I have 91 awd vcu welded & 92 awd vcu welded. They are different with the space between the teeth. Both have been tested in FWD 350hp cars.

Thanks for the info. Seems I got alot to learn. I would just keep my 3s frontwheel drive.
