Yep, so I just got my car about 2 weeks ago (1991 Stealth ES) and the clutch started slipping today. The odometer reads 58,300 miles (the interior would match the mileage... perfect red leather, no stains on carpet, just immaculate) and I don't think it was tampered with. I haven't even done the 60,000 mile service yet and the clutch is already going? Is this the normal mileage for this drivetrain? I previously had a Focus and didn't have to worry about the clutch until 90,000 miles...
And on top of that question, what kind of clutch should I get? It's a DD and will be slightly modded. I did some research and am thinking Spec Stage 2 and a 9lb. Aluminum Fidanza Flywheel... I'm not sure on pricing though, if there's anything better for less $$$ please tell me!
low mileage on an old car can mean a lot of stop and go city driving which eats the clutch. Depending on how many owners your car had in the last 19 years or so there was probably someone along the way who abused the clutch or just didn't know how to drive.
I'd just get a stock replacement auto parts store clutch for a FWD unless you plan on drag racing it really hard or going turbo. I'd also just pickup an oem flywheel from autozone or get yours resurfaced.
#1 60K on a clutch is not bad. They can last longer, but 60K isn't too bad. It all depends on the driver/abuse.
#2 unless you are going to add LOTS more power over stock, I would stick with an OEM or stage 1 clutch. There is no reason to upgrade clutches on a stock car. Don't be one of those people that feel the need to say "I have a stageX clutch".
