This problem
is specific to the automatic transmission. The issue you have is exactly what happened with mine last year. Having overdrive on disengages the tranny after 3rd gear, slipping it into neutral when it should shift into 4th. Turning it off lets you drive 1st through 3rd with no problem, but then you don't have 4th.
I think you will burn more gas that way only at speeds above, say, 45 or 50, when you might want to be in 4th gear. You can fix that with the IPT end clutch kit and the write-up I linked to. I think you'll find, when you take your end clutch apart, that the friction material on the pressure plates is worn smooth compared to the new plates in the kit.
I think it saves me a decent bit of gas because, with a SOHC engine and an end clutch that actually works, I can do 65 on the freeway at only 2500 rpm. Like I said, cheap, easy fix. $90 plus a pair of snap ring pliers and an hour of your time should take care of it.
Damn, IPT should be giving me commissions on their end clutch sales, haha. Again, I would appreciate positive rep if you feel I answered your question. Let me know how it works out, guys.
