I just bought a 92 vr4, 18 spline and the guy told me it just needed a clutch. So I hop in the car and tried shifting it in 1st gear and it wont go in at all. Then he told me, he thinks it might be the linkages binding or something. It was weird because while the car was on, I can put it in any other gear without engaging the clutch, and the car wouldn't go anywhere. So I pulled the transaxle off and completely removed it from the car so I can change the clutch and find what was binding. Found nothing, then I started playing with the levers on the transaxle and it still wouldn't go into first, but it'll go in all gears fine. Then again, when it was still in the car it went in all gears without pushing in the clutch while the car was on.
Do you guys think the tranny is broken? Note: there was no tranny fluid in the car when I was puting it in 2nd to 5th gear with the car turned on without pushing in the clutch. Appearently he started working on it, but wanted to sell it as a whole so he put everything back.

Did he put the clutch back in? Unless that clutch is seriously jacked, even a slipping clutch wouldn't let you do that. Unless there is something blocking the linkage at the tranny, it sounds internal. It could be simpley the shift shaft on the tranny was removed and not reinstalled correctly. I would take that out first and inspect it. There is a 13 mm bolt on the front face by the shaft, two 10 mm up top by the shaft, then yank up sharpely with the shifter in neutral. There is a spring on the end of it inside the tranny, becareful it doesn't fall deep into the tranny. Use a pin magnet to get it out. Shine a light down in there and take a look at the rods you see in there. The bottom one has a metal bushing that is supposed to be pressed into the housing but they have been know to back out. Look at the roll pins that hold the forks on the rods and the shift shaft too.
On the shaft is a swivel looking thing and a set of lobes. The lobes should be aligned when reinstalling so that they go into the forks on the rods in the tranny. Apply a small amount of grease to the end of the shift shaft to prevent the spring from falling out of place.
