If you were the orig. owner of the car, and still living at the address where you lived when you purchased the car, you would have received a notice. You don't need paper-work to have the t-case serviced. I don't know if they will fix/service the t-case with it being off the car. By all means, try.

hey,
i just got an email back from the NHTSA stating my complications with Mitsubishi Hq and my local Mitsubishi dealer declineing a second recall on a leaking transfercase. They said: Thank you for contacting the U.S. Department of Transportation's Vehicle Safety Hotline Information Center. IF you feel the recall did not remedy the problem and the dealer will not perform the recall again without charge, you may visit our website at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ for information on how to file a Vehicle Safety Complaint. The methods to file a complaint are as follows: * Website * Contacting our Hotline In order to be eligible for free remedy, the vehicle cannot be more than 10 years old on the date the defect or non-compliance is determined. Under the law, the age of the vehicle is calculated from the date of sale to the first purchaser. You may also visit our website at www.safercar.gov for information pertaining to Recalls and Defects. This site will provide you with the following resource information: * Filing a Complaint * Ongoing Investigations * Checking for Recalls We hope that you find this information helpful. However, if you need additional information on our services please feel free to contact us at 1-888-327-4236. Thank you, NHTSA.dot.gov Response Team Disclaimer: "This response is for information purposes only and does not constitute an official communication of the U.S. Department of Transportation. For an official response, please write U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 7th Street, SW, Washington, DC 20590. Does this sound correct about not being able to get the recall done after 10 years from the original purchase of the vehicle? Since i have a 1994 VR-4 and if this is true, i am no longer able to get the recall done since the first buyer purchased the car in 94? Andrew |

Well i just got a brand new transfer put on yesterday. It was leaking but wasnt damaged but they still gave me a brand new one with the new design.
2 years ago my transfer case went bad on me which destroyed the output shaft and some other things. I paid about 3000$ for it to get it fixed. Am I eligable to get my money back or since i just had it replaced under recall is there nothing i can do about it?

I'm Burning Star IV
|
I'm going through this horseshit now too...
I have a 95 VR-4 with 127k on it. I check my t-case everyoil change to make sure its ok. My last oil change was dissapointing. There is gear oil sludge all over the t-case. And the seams look "wet". I called Mitsu to see when I could bring it in. They asked for the VIN#. They ran the # and told me the recall was done by the last owner in Dec. of 2002 and they were no longer liable. I asked what was actually done...nothing...car passed visual inspection so they sent it on its way. So next I called Mitsu of North America, they gave me the same bullshit and told me that if I want to pay my local dealership to diagnose the problem, that I could try and argue that it needs to be replaced. I'm not paying them a fucking dime. So I filed a complaint with the NHTSA today. How long does it take to get a response from the NHTSA? Should I be arguing with my local dealership or Mitsu of NA. I thought I might be a real prick and call them to inform them I just went straight to the NHTSA so they can deal with them now, but I want this solved as peacefully as possible. Anyone have any advice for now?

i called nhtsa and they told me that mitsubishi is only responsible for replacing it once. So if its allready been done...then you might be out of luck. But keep trying and see if you get anywhere.

I have a 97 VR-4 with 32K miles on it that was inspeted by the dealer before I got it. The dealer reported that the transfer case was seeping. It has an issue with 2nd gear grinding under high RPM's. I was looking into getting it fixed, but sounds like this should be addressed with the recall.
The recall should fix the transmission gear problem, if the TC is replace correct? |

Sounds like Mitsu. is a bunch of ass hats. Dodge has replaced mine twice under the recall because it cracked. They didn't even question it. I took it both times to them and told them exactly what was wrong and where it was cracked. They basically said i probably knew more about the car then any of their mechanics and ordered me a new one both times. Hell, the first time it was in for the recall they let me install my new t-case in their parking lot because their "tranny guy" was out for a couple days and my car was my daily driver at that time.
