Help!
I was told three months ago that 1st, 2nd, & 3rd are about to go. My tranny is making a nice whining noise right now. I just had my '99 VR4 in on Tuesday for another reason, and they told me that my transfer case was leaking. They said there was nothing they could do since it was an "Aftermarket" TC. Is there such a thing, or are they just trying to get out cheap? If so, how can I tell if it really is aftermarket? I find it hard to believe a car with 63k already has had to have it replaced.
Thanks!!!!
Aaron

Check or replace oil to proper grade. I would check for leaks at the seals. The safety recall is required by Mitsubishi as it is a "safety issue".

Ok what do I do. I went to Mitsubishi on fulton ave in sacramento and they told me my brake lines and Transfer case were on recall. I went coz I was told by a mechanic that my Tc was leaking. When I went they said it would take a week to get done. so I told them I would come back when I was ready to leave the car. I come back and the new staff tells me that it was closed already and signed off. What now?? Anyhelp would be great.

Thanks.

I just called Mitsubishi at 888-648-7820 / Opt 3 / Opt 5 this week, and they are able to look at what dealership signed off, and the date it was signed. This may help get you answers, but you still may have to fight with the dealership. Also, with this number, you can file a complaint towards the dealersip if you see fit.

Have a Mits dealer look at it again and tell you where it is leaking. Maybe to give you a diagnosis and estimate for repair. Use that to your advantage. It may be its leaking elsewhere and not at the T case. If they wont look at it then find a new mechanic. Try to look under the car yourself too. I know this may seem difficult but the T case may not be the problem or the source of the leak. It is sometimes hard to tell. It could be the seals where it connects to the tranny. The outer seals can be easily replaced by a dealer or qualified mechanic. Its a matter of removing the Tcase to replace. The T case recall involves litterally going through the entire unit and replacing the seals, etc. If this has already been done then you should be OK. Now there is always the chance the Tcase is not original and they are basing the decision on VIN only rather than actual unit inspection. Confirm by vehicle history if the T case is OEM. Plus call the number posted above for more help.

Some advice please - I have 170K miles on a 92 TT, and last Friday the splines on the outputshaft from the tranny to the transfer case stripped. The local Dodge dealer is doing the transfer case recall (thanks to the web site for the info - wish I had read it before), but have called and said that these splines had rusted out, were not part of the recall, the shaft could not be replaced seperately anymore, and I would require a refurbed tranny fot $5k plus labor.

Comments on what has been covered in the past by Dodge/Mitsu would be greatly appreciated.

This dealer is the one that did the under 100K warrenty work, and said had I continued to maintain it at his shop, they would have noted the recall notice via the vn number, and would have checked the fluids. He didn't inform me of the recall, of course. I have not replied to the dealer yet, but my line of reasoning would be that I change the oil every 3K miles religiously, had I known about the recall from the dealer I would have had it done, or at a minimum had the transfer case every time it was up for an oil change. BTW, the tranfer case itself had rust in it. I originally had it towed the the folks that do the maint on all my three cars, they took it apart, commented on the rust in the tc.

Since the splines rusted out, it was because of the lack of oil in the transfer case, and should be covered by the recall. Is this realistic?
