How hard is it to fill up the TC's if they are leaking and what type of oil should we put in them to hold off till the recall is complete.
The thud is just caused by play in the driveline. Since its AWD, and there are so many components to the driveline, there are quite a few places where this play can be introduced, and all of them will contribute some. For example, worn carrier bearings (hold the driveshaft) will allow the driveshaft to flex more than it should, allowing play. And the TC contributes some too, and the more worn out the bearings in the TC are, the looser all of the mechanical parts inside will fit, and that introduces play. The lack of oil does not necessarily cause the thud, if you have a lack of oil, its already too late. If the TC is leaking really fast right now, don't drive it. You can't check the fluid level every time you pull into a gas station, b/c you need to have it on ramps or a lift so you can take the fill plug out. Changing the TC oil is not a big challenge (do a search to find out how, I've written more than enough here ), it takes the same stuff as the transmission, like 75W90 Gl-4.
I had this issue for a while. I have tha ACPT carbon fiber driveshaft so my points of issue are a little less than the standard vr4 driveshaft but I hate to say that the play I had in the drivetrain was at the output shaft. Just had it replaced and it went away. Don't get paranoid as not everyone's issue is the same but its definately something to consider and have checked out. Good way to is to put it up on a lift and physically grab the driveshaft and shake it and listen for a click/chatter noise and investigate the area of that. Thats usually where the play is at. Hope this helps.
Now wait a sec, I have a 91, but they would not perform the recall repair on it because it was produced May 3, 1991 and the recall was only up to the May 1, 1991 models. My transfer case seals went out and it ran dry for months. I finally had them replaced, but I am sure damage was already done. (and I have the same THUD sound that others have mentioned, there is significant play in the driveshaft) They had better include the 91's that didn't make it in the first recall.
I just bought a '92 VR4 outta NY last month and was wondering whut would happen if the recall didn't go into effect until next year. Would that mean that all the '92 owners would just get f***ed because the car would be over 10 years old? That would really suck. I could really use a new transfer case cause I don't really know whut kind of condition mine is in now... probably not good cause she's got 110,000 on her. let me know

guys i think if something is recalled for safety purposes you have the life of the car to go and get it replaced. they cant just say no becuase your car is 10 years old...it can still kill a person if not attended to..the only way a certain year would get left out is if they found during the investigation that certain years dont have a problem..i may be talking outta my ass here but i think im right, maybe.
yeah that sounds right but how come the '91s wouldn't be able to go get a new transfer case with the rest of us then provided they did not take advantage of the 1st recall. The '91s have the same shitty transfer cases as we do.
Only thing is my already failed cause mitsu screwed up and the cap was not on. The fluid drained and it locked up, luckily it was at the stop light when it finally went and not on I90 when I would be doing 75-80mph or more when it creeps up or I am doing a quick burst in the 65mph zone. I could have died or been seriously hurt pretty easily if it gave out at those speeds. I always do a min of like 65 even in the 55 zone and even faster in the 65.

Future mods (not in any order)... Stage 2/3 Heads, Rear Sway Bar, CFDS, LSD, Rebuilt tranny AGAIN (thinks to Mitsu), Clutch, CF Hood, Propane (already bought along time ago), Pre-Cat Eliminators, AEM Stand alone, Repainted, Big Brake Kit, Rims... think I could get close to 500WHP out of that on DR500s?http://www.penguinhosting.net/~matt/public/picture2/mycar/vr-4/
