Sean... LOVE the avatar.. sweet looking car dude...
Now for my real question to the guru's... My buddy has a stock 92 rt/tt, it sits all spring/fall/winter.... he had his recall done on the TC (they looked at it and saw no leaks so signed off on the recall)... about 6,000 mi later, the TC seizes up on a city street. He takes it to the dealer, delaer says that the TC is toast as well as the output shaft and they want to charge him 10k to fix it!!haha Is there any way he can get it fixed under the recall since there was hardly any drive time on the car since the recall was supposedly done?

Honestly, I don't know what to tell ya. There has been a good number of people that have had this problem. I would suggest he speak with an Lawyer. That might scare the Mitsubishi dealer into settling and fixxing the car under said recall.
The NHTSA opened up an investigation on 31 JAN 2002 You could contact them, they may be able to help. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site...f2c!-154572781 |

So my car ('92 VR4) just started making a funny sound, come to find out it's probably the transfer case. The mechanic said this was the problem. It drives, but you can tell just by listening to it that it should not be driven. So i was looking up prices on transfer cases and found this thread. What does this mean for me? Can i take this to a dealership and have it replaced considering the fact that it is already busted? (if the mech is right) I've only posted a couple of times on this thread so i'm not sure how active it is. I'm also in the Navy, so coming up with the cash for something like this will not be easy. Any information is helpful! Thanks.

Took it in for a diagnostic at a transmission shop. Needs a new transmission, parts alone $5500. Do i have to prove that it was the recalled item that made this happen? This is just crazy. Everything was running just fine, too. It still drives, although i've left it pretty much parked except for the trip to the tranny shop. Maybe it's time to trade it in? This is just horrible news if Mitsubishi won't repair at no cost.
Drifting away from the recall a bit, and assuming i'm stuck with the bill, what would you do? I bought it two and a half years ago with 86,000 miles, and it now has 130,000 with $4,000 left to pay off. I wouldn't sell this to a private party without telling them about the tranny, and then i'm guessing i'd get very little for it. Ideas? Maybe sell of parts? Can you do this? |

Have mitsu run the VIN to see if the TC was already recalled ...
If it was, you can get a 5spd for $1500 and a 6spd for around there if you can find one. It's not too hard to put it in yourself.

I checked ebay motors, and i did find a few for around 1500 (complete transmissions). I have a guy that will put it in for me, so that's good. Now i just need to figure out which transmission type i need. I guess there are 18 spline and 25 spline... Is there a site where i can look up which exact tranny i have by vin number?
