Okay, here's the deal for CANADIANS.

I just spent over 3 hours on the phone with daimler-chysler & transport canada.

I spoke to the head of recalls at TC (transport canada) and he told me the dodge is aware of the recall, and it has been launched. However, it has only been launched and their is no expected completion date for when we will be able to get our x-fer cases repaired. The reason is the dodge/mitsu do not have a solution for the leaking cases, and by canadian law they are not required to create one (even though I'm sure they still will, imagine the lawsuits). The only thing they have to do is make cusotmers aware of the recall, not fix it.

Now after speaking to DC(daimler chrysler). They informed me that if and when a recall is issued, they will reveiw all repairs that you completed on the recalled item (x-fer case) and POSSIBLY re-imburse you for your out-of-pocket costs. I also asked DC if it matters if you had the work done at a private repair shop or chrysler, they said it does not matter as long as you have receipts proving the work and cost of parts.

So basically the recall is real, but their is no solution. So you are on your own to fix it, but be ware that you may never see a cent from dodge/mitsu, or yo may be re-imbursed in total. This info is for CDN's, it may be diff in the US. Also since DC is no longer shareholders of Mitsu, their might be some bad blood which could screw us over even more.

Hope this helps, but for me it means more out-of-pocket expenses.

hey 6g72tt,
thanks for puttin the time in talking to TC and DC..... man i wish they d get their a$$es in gear. So here is a questions for all...7 mon. ago my output shaft was blown and i had to get a new one. Is this something that a leaky transfer case would have caused?? I got a hardened new output shaft from Getrag and no probs since. Just wondering if thats something i can take up with Mitsu/DC should this recall go thru. Thanks again for your help 6g!

Was the guy you spoke to at Transport Canada John Granery? If so, then he knows no more now than when I talked to him in July. It sounds like there will be no suitable fix in the short term.

I had Mister Transmission tell me that they could fix the leak for a couple of hundred dollars. Presumably there is more to it than that or DC would just take that course. Has anyone had a leaking TC fixed by replacing gaskets or some other way, and was it successful?

Granery is away on Vacation, i actua;lly spoke to the head of recalls for TC, Nigel Mortimer. He was nice enough to take my call, but don't everyone call him!! I would hate to piss the guy off. He called me back after I posted and said he will look into it even further and see if he can get me some sort fo ETA. So keep your head up guys, and pray for good things.

I will be keeping in contact with him and give you updates as they become available to me. It would be nice to spend money on mods instead of repairs

After a few months of looking, I finally found one with low miles and what seems to be a good price (IMO). I'll be picking up my new car next weekend. I'll be driving home from Canada. Is there anything that I should listen for or feel for to know if the TC is going bad?

It's not that they "go bad" but rather the oil in them slowly leaks out over a long period of time. If you crawl under the car, follow the driveshaft to the front of the car. It will run into a goldish looking box with ribs on it. If there's oil all over it, it's probably leaking. Have a mechanic top it off sometime, or do it yourself.
