Well, my situation went from worst to best in a matter of two weeks. Shortly after I was told my Huntington Beach Mitsubishi that my VIN wasn't listed on the recall list (which is TOTAL BS because Mitsubishi hasn't even issued the official recall yet!), I was contacted by Norco Mitsubishi to tell me that I was #20 out of 20 people/cars that qualified for a new x-fer case, $100 and a rental car for a day. I had gone up there about 2 months earlier to have them inspect my car since they said they *might* be able to get me a new one. I had pretty much written the entire thing off until that phone call. Anyway, I just got off the phone with Norco Mitsubishi and my car is done and ready for me to pick up
It took a few trips up there, about 4 or so, but it was worth it for a brand new one and $100. The guy was showing me the sheet they have to fill out while they inspect them and he said mine was leaking from 4 out of the 5 possible spots listed, so it was definitely not in good shape. He also showed me a container that he has to ship my x-fer case fluid in back to MMC or Japan or something, I'm not sure. They kind of gave me a little slack about my PitroadM DP and said he'd have to check with Corporate to see if they're authorized to remove it or some crap......he also mentioned something about it being really close to the x-fer case and said that might cause it to get hot or something After I heard that I just said don't worry about it, I'll have the stock DP on the car when I come back for the swap. Other than that, it wasn't too big of a hassle. I wonder how longs it takes to get your check??Anyway, seeing as how bad my x-fer case was f'd up, they might have to re-design one for the recall, I'm not sure. I mean 100k+ isn't bad, but that thing was leaking pretty bad he said. Hopefully Mitsubishi will issue the official recall soon, I know a lot of you guys are waiting. I was just lucky to get in on the original testing deal; hopefully they'll start the ball rolling for everyone else some time soon. I was kind of curious why they were still doing the testing if they've pretty much already decided on the recall, but who knows that the hell they're doing. Later!

What are signs that the transfer case is going, besides leaking? Does it get real notchy or rough, any telltale signs before it explodes all over the asphalt?

I spoke to John Grannery of Transport Canada this morning. In June Mitsubishi asked for and received a two month delay in order to determine how to best fix the transfer case. The fix they allowed for the '91 cars didn't solve the problem so they need to determine a better solution. I also checked with a local dealer and they still had no details on a recall.
John had two suggestions. One, obviously, is try to be patient. This is an active case but time is necessary for them to get to the right solution. Nobody wants the fix to be inadequate, again. Second, check your transfer case to be sure that you are not running out of fluid. I do not know how to do that but will have mine checked this week when it is in for a tranny rebuild. Recall or not, it's your life that is at stake if it breaks at high speed. John appears to be on our side on this one and is doing some further research to see if there is anything more he can help with now, but it looks like end of summer before we can expect the recall work to be available. Don't bug John, he is just the messenger, but will help where he can. Good luck.
