Talking Canadians update!!!!

D
FANTASTIC NEWS for CANADIANS with a 3/S !!

I just spoke with the Head of Recall claims for Transport Canada (John Granery 1-800-333-0510), and he let me know that Transport Canada has now also officially announced the recall in Canada as of June 12, 2002.
AND this recall Supersedes all previous transfer case recalls (ie for the 1991). Which means EVEN IF they already did the recall on your 1991 stealth TT, they have to do it again!
As of the time of this writting he said it's not on the web page yet becuase they have to do it in both official languages (english/french) and there's always political red tape when putting stuff on the web site, BUT the recall IS good for Canada as well.
John also said that most/all dealers probably dont know anything about it yet since it was only officially recalled for canada yesterday (June 12), and likely the dealers won't be ready to do anything about it until July.

The recall campaign number is: #02108 b17

He also told me if there were any problems with trying to get the recall done to contact him about it, but give the dealers a bit of time to get ready. That is, dont call and rag on them to do it now-wait until end of June or July. By that time they will all be aware of the recall and what they have to do to fix the problems.

Cheers!
-Shawn

It shouldn't matter where you are. Just so long as you have a car that is on recall ANY dealer can do it. All of their data systems are tied together to the main office. I remember doing a recall on a car that was out of town once while working at Dodge.

Krusher - The 94 and 95 gears are inter-changable. I know that 94-97 TC's have the same part number and so are identicle. I don't know if the 91-93 (5-speeds) use the same TC though. I'll have the dealer run the parts numbers and I'll get back to you guys. However, you can't buy JUST the gears through the dealer. You would have to call some place else and see if they have some to sell. Kormex may have some used (although still in good condition). CRS said they don't sell new parts for the TC only the trannies, but they knew of a place that rebuilt them, so maybe you could call CRS and get their number also. I know you could send your TC or even your transaxle to Getrag of Germany and they will rebuild them. But that is a few thousand because of over seas shipping. Does any one else know of other places that rebuild these things?

Default recall

I spoke to the dealer over here in San Jose ( Steven's Creek Mitsu). Spoke to Bob, the parts manager and he said there is talk of a recall but nothing is official. Also..just for some of you who think the "dealer" is screwing you..Bob also told me that the dealer would make a shitload of money off of a recall like this because its all revenue, so he's actually hoping this happends. Mitsu japan eats the bill, not the dealer.

There is a local shop that will rebuild my transfer case and my transaxle. He could order gear sets for 95 and 96 Stealth but there is nothing available for a 94. The price for a gear set was about $800 CDN and there were 2 differen't gear sets available. I'm guessing the differen't gear sets are for a differen't spline coming off the tranny. A new transfer case from Dodge was $4000 CDN and it would cost me about $1500 to rebuild with gears. With the recall already launched in Canada I am going to throw the parts in a box and drive my car home. Dodge was not helpfull at all and they would not take the recall number from me and got annoyed when I asked them if there was any way they could get the recall to speed up a little. I'm going to call Transport Canada again on monday and see if Dodge is just ignoring it or if they haven't recieved the recall yet. Both Dodge and Transport Canada said they should have the recall within a day or 2 of it being launched. I got the car 3 months ago from a Dodge dealer and the transfer case seased a month ago and then blew the bearing apart. I'm sure the dealer knew there was a problem with it. When the TC was taken apart it was filled to the brim with oul. Probably to reduce noise and make it feel normal. I did feel the clunk in the clutch but I've had no experience with that kind of problem before. I'm still investigating and looking for some kind of a slip up that will prove they knew and if I can do that I'll go to the newspapers to tell them what kind of unsafe cars they are selling since they have been such a holes with the situation.
Also, if anyone knows a reason why you can't drive without a transfer case I'de like to know before I do it. :-) I will be making a cover to protect the spline shaft and crank gear that's exposed.
