Default TC recall in Australia

Hello,

I have been following this thread for some time now and I still can't figure out whether the TC for the '92-'99 VR4 was officialy recalled in the US.

I'm in contact with a government official in Australia that is pushing Mitsubishi to recall the TC here, but I need the US TC recall number. His latest reply:

Quote:
Steve.
Mitsubishi have advised that the USA recall was for 4/90 to 4/91 vehicles for a faulty oil seal in the transfer case which would fit with a locked transmission failure because it had run dry. The 3000GT only came to Australia in 93 hence it is not applicable. The only recall conducted in Australia was the brake hoses as I advised. There was also a US recall on the seatbelt buckles in 91. Regards Ross
Do we have a recall number in the US yet? If so, could someone please post it, as the recalls in Australia seem to depend on this number.

Thanks
Steve

I hope this isn't a stupid question...

If the transfer case is leaking, would there be some drops of fluid under the car or just fluid on the case? How can you tell the transfer case is failing (other than the wheels locking up). Are there any other signs that it is failing such as strange noises, etc.

There would likely be both.....wet/drenched x-fer case and if you clean it off you can see a drop start to form. That's the only sign I know of unless you can detect a slight increase in friction/resistance, but that would be hard to do.

Neil, I'm gonna be checkin my tranny and transfer case oil levels this saturday cause I'm pretty sure I got a leak under there. So if ya want and if you live close to Milwaukee we could get together and check both of our cars out.

Thanks Master_D, I would take you up on that offer but I don't want to take the car on a long drive (the car is making a strange "wrrrrrrrr" noise and I am paranoid that it is the transfer case going). I'm in Appleton and a drive to Milwaukee would normally not be a problem, but after reading all the postings about the transfer case locking up I'm a little nervous.

I am hoping the "wrrrrrrrr" noise isn't from the transfer case, but the pitch of the noise is dependent on speed, not engine RPM. I am thinking it is something in the drive train, but I don't know for sure what it is. Its noticeable with the windows closed and gets a little louder as I go from 10 MPH on up.

Anyone know what this could be?

Here is how to check your TC and what signs to look for and LISTEN for. First you need to have access to a lift. The car must be level to check the fluid. So once you have it on the lift in the air check your fluids in both the TC and transaxle. Fill them if they are low. Their are two different signs of fluid escaping the case. One is the most obvious. Fluid all over the TC possibley with a steady drip or in sever cases, a stream of fluid comeing form one of any TC seals and/or gaskets. The other is not very damgerous but you should keep an eye on it and get it fixed. Look for areas that look like they have been sprayed or had fluid spilled on them. This the begining of a leak. It is called seeping. It will get worse over time so now is the time to repair it. NOT WHEN THE RECALL IS ISSUED!!!! For saftys sake, do not count on this recall to happen. None of you need to take a chance with your life. Just get it fixed now and be down with it. You can easily do it your self for the price of a few exhuast gaskets and the seal itself. It takes about an hour or two.

A sign that your TC is running dry would be the "wrrrrr" noise that Neils94VR4 is descibing. Neil, you need to get the car toed to some place and have it looked at and filled with fluid. DO NOT DRIVE IT!!!! Your life isn't worth the cost of towing your car. (Be sure to get a flat bed tow truck only.) This "wrrr" noise is caused by a bearing going out. With out the fluid pressent the friction of spinning the bearing wears out the bearing hundreds of times faster. The fluid also helps reduce the noises that bearing and gears make also. Some of you may know that if you hear a "wrrrr" noise our howling noise from one fo the wheel that means the wheel bearing is bad. The same is true for the bearings in the TC. Neil, have the fluid level checked, filled, and then test driven to see if it is the TC or some other bearing going out. If it can still be heard when the TC is filled then replace the TC. Forget the recall and save your car and yourself.

That's cool Neil I didn't know that your problem was that bad. Definately get that taken car of ASAP. My hydraulic jack crapped out on me today so I couldn't check mine either I'm just gonna let the dealer look at it on Monday when I get my AC recharged. Maybe I'll replace the seal next weekend.

Would it be smart to replace all seals on the Xfer case? I'm just asking because it seem a little scary to open the Xfer case in all the seams.

Default tc

Btw,

I spoke to M&S recycling and they told me they can rebuild your tc for $500. Thats a hell of alot better than $1800 retail new if you don't want to spend the cash on a new one.
